Local services and rules

Moving to Auburn: who to call and what the city asks.

Auburn is in Lee County, Alabama, and a few of its local rules differ from what a newcomer might assume. The city does not require a dog license, only proof of rabies vaccination. Its Recycling Drop-Off Center is open 24 hours a day all year. Moving vans are restricted on public streets, and the city runs a Trash Amnesty round for oversized debris.

Parking a moving van on an Auburn street

Under the city's property maintenance rules, moving vans and other commercial vehicles over seven feet wide or twenty-five feet long may not park on public streets except for loading and unloading, which is limited to twenty-four hours.

The same page says a vehicle may not be left on a public street for more than seventy-two hours.

Hours for noisy construction work

Noisy construction work may not continue after 7:00 p.m. on any project, and may not start before 7:00 a.m. in a single-family neighborhood.

Downtown on-street parking

Downtown on-street parking is $1/hour Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., limited to two hours, and free after 6 p.m. and on weekends.

Starting water, sewer and garbage service

The Auburn Water Works Board is the public corporation that runs the water treatment plant and distribution system serving the City of Auburn.

Starting City utility service means paying refundable deposits of $35.00 for water, $30.00 for sewer and $30.00 for garbage, plus a $15.00 non-refundable service charge. The city asks for current state or government issued photo identification, because service will not start without it.

When moving out, the city's utility billing FAQ says to complete the UBO deactivation form or the service transfer form at least one business day before the move date.

Curbside collection at $32.00 a month

The City charges $32.00 per month for curbside collection. The monthly fee covers weekly collection of household garbage, trash and recycling. Carts go out at the curb by 6 a.m. on collection day.

Recycling goes in a 95-gallon blue cart, with all recyclables in one container, on the garbage collection day.

The Recycling Drop-Off Center is at 356 N Donahue Dr.

Furniture, appliances and the Trash Amnesty

Furniture, appliances, yard waste and other bulky items are collected as trash, which goes out on the same day as garbage collection. Trash includes appliances and furniture, among other things.

The city's move-out page says to put discarded trash in one compact pile away from low tree limbs, power lines, water meters, mailboxes and vehicles.

The City's Trash Amnesty waives collection fees for oversized yard debris and bulky items over five cubic yards; the 2026 round ran March 9 through April 3.

Library cards, voter registration and the occupation license fee

A library card is available at any service desk of the Auburn Public Library; bring a photo ID and proof of residency. Non-resident library cards cost $25 per year.

Auburn residents register to vote through the Lee County Board of Registrars, phone (334) 737-3635.

Auburn charges an occupation license fee of 1% of gross wages earned within the City, usually withheld by the employer.

Renting, flood maps and getting around

Owners who lease residential property in Auburn must buy a business license; the first year license fee is $105.

The City's Flood Map shows how the floodplain affects a property.

Lee-Russell Public Transit runs an on-demand service in designated areas within Auburn, Opelika, Lee and Russell Counties; call 334.749.9092. Columbus Airport (CSG) has scheduled commercial service on Delta Air Lines.
