Local services and rules

Moving to Belgrade: who to call and what the city asks.

Belgrade is in Gallatin County, Montana. Belgrade City Code overrides HOA parking restrictions on city-owned streets and alleys. A fence in the side or rear yard may not exceed six feet in height, and a Minor Land Use Permit is required for a fence. Breaking seals on a water meter or tampering with its piping is a misdemeanor.

Right-of-way and three-day parking rules

Campers, trailers, buses, commercial vehicles, equipment and recreational vehicles may not be left in the city right-of-way longer than necessary for loading or unloading. Any part of a vehicle that extends into a public right-of-way counts as parked on the street and is subject to the parking regulations.

A vehicle may stay on the street no longer than three days without moving, as long as it is legally parked and with the flow of traffic. Parking within eight feet of a mailbox is unlawful from 7:00am to 5:00pm and any other time mail is being delivered or collected.

Snow and ice on sidewalks and alleys

Property owners, managers or tenants must clear adjacent sidewalks and pedestrian pathways of snow and ice by noon the next day following a snowfall. Alleys receive no regular winter maintenance and are plowed or sanded only when needed to maintain essential public services.

NorthWestern Energy, water and sewer

NorthWestern Energy provides energy services; the city does not.

Water and sewer service for a new owner starts with a New Services Form from city Utility Billing. River Rock Subdivision utilities are run separately from the city, by the River Rock Water Sewer District.

Garbage haulers and Gallatin drop-off sites

Garbage collection is not a city service; L&L Site Services and Republic Services provide garbage collection.

The Gallatin Solid Waste Management District runs recycling drop-off sites in Belgrade and several other towns. Each site accepts cardboard, mixed paper, aluminum and steel cans, and #1 and #2 plastic bottles.

Streamline buses and library cards

Streamline buses run weekday commuter service to Belgrade as well as service in Bozeman and Livingston. A weekday route connects Bozeman to downtown Belgrade and Belgrade High School.

A Belgrade Community Library card is available to any resident of Gallatin County. The card is also good at any major library in Gallatin County. A person without a photo ID or proof of address can get a temporary card valid for one month, with two check outs and two holds.

Permits, short-term rentals and code enforcement

Building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits are all issued through the Building Department and are available through the online permitting portal.

Short-term rentals are permitted only in residential units in residential districts or within mixed-use districts.

Police code enforcement officers handle parking, animals at large, nuisance property and abandoned vehicles.
