Local services and rules
Moving to Brunswick: who to call and what the city asks.
Brunswick Landing is the former Brunswick Naval Air Station, and site work there that disturbs soil needs Navy approval before the Town will issue permits. The Amtrak Downeaster station is at 16 Station Avenue and is the line's northernmost stop, running between Brunswick and Boston's North Station. Brunswick is a town in Cumberland County, Maine.
The Obstruction Permit for a truck at the curb
The Town requires an Obstruction Permit whenever a public road, sidewalk or parking space, including spaces in municipal lots, is reserved or blocked for use by a contractor or person working on an adjacent property. The town engineering department handles these permits.
Parking bans on town roads and municipal lots
When a parking ban is called, no overnight parking is allowed on town roads or in municipal lots except Cabot Street, including the Recreation Center. The Cabot Street municipal lot and the Cedar Street Park & Ride lot are the lots designated for overnight parking during a ban.
A car parked on the street during a ban will be ticketed and towed at the owner's expense. Emergency parking bans are routinely declared during storms or for clean-up after one. Residents can get an email notification when a ban is declared by subscribing to the Town's email notification list.
Public Works maintains most roads in Brunswick. The Maine Department of Transportation maintains I-295 and the Exit 28 ramp to Pleasant Street, divided Route 1 from Maine Street to the West Bath town line, and the Old Portland Road.
Pay-As-You-Throw blue bags and curbside collection
The town offers weekly curbside trash and recycling collection to all residents. Collection day depends on the street, and materials must be at the curb by 7:00 a.m.
Only household trash in the Town's Pay-As-You-Throw blue bags is collected, and each resident is limited to four 33-gallon bags a week. Recycling is single-stream, so all recyclable items go together in one bin with no sorting.
Over-sized items and demolition debris that cannot go curbside can be taken to the Casella Waste transfer station in West Bath, and no permit is needed.
Graham Road and the food waste drop-off sites
The Graham Road Processing Facility is at 49 Graham Road and is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 8:00am to 3:30 pm year round. It takes white goods such as washers, dryers and fridges, scrap metal, tires, electronic waste and brush.
The town runs food waste drop-off sites at the Public Works facility at 9 Industry Road and at the Recreation Center at 220 Neptune Drive, both open 24/7.
Gas, water and sewer accounts
Maine Natural Gas Corporation, headquartered in Brunswick, serves Brunswick among its natural gas communities.
Water is run by the Brunswick & Topsham Water District, and a new tenant or owner opens an account with a New Customer form. Sewer service comes from the Brunswick Sewer District, which serves Brunswick and, by contract, Topsham.
The Brunswick Link
The Brunswick Link provides Monday to Friday public transit service in Brunswick, with stops in town, on Brunswick Landing and around Cook's Corner, and connections to the METRO BREEZ, Concord Coach and the Amtrak Downeaster.
School, dog and voter registration
The Brunswick School Department serves the town: Kate Furbish Elementary School for Pre-K to grade 2, Harriet Beecher Stowe School for grades 3 to 5, Brunswick Junior High School for grades 6 to 8 and Brunswick High School for grades 9 to 12. Registration is online, starting with a pre-registration form, and needs proof of residency, a birth certification and immunization records.
All dogs over six months old must be licensed each year in the town where they live, with a rabies certificate and proof of neutering or spaying. A new dog must be licensed within ten days of moving to Brunswick, and licenses expire each December 31st.
The Town Clerk's Office registers voters and handles address and name changes Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
