Local services and rules
Moving to Durango: who to call and what the city asks.
Durango is a home rule city and the county seat of La Plata County, Colorado. Under the city wildlife ordinance, garbage in bear country goes out only on the morning of pickup. Fully automated wildlife-resistant trash containers are distributed to areas identified as having particularly high bear activity.
Meter bags, parking and snow rules
Meter bags reserve a parking space for commercial vehicles or special events. The process starts with a right of way (ROW) permit from Community Development, followed by a meter bag application.
On-street parking is not allowed in the Central Business District between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., and vehicles parked there are subject to tow at the owner's expense. Downtown parking meter enforcement does not apply on holidays or weekends.
Snow plowing runs 24 hours a day during storm events.
La Plata Electric Association service changes
La Plata Electric Association has an office at 45 Stewart St. in Durango. It takes requests to start, transfer or stop electric service by phone during its business hours or through its online portal.
The association asks for at least 48 business hours of notice before the effective date of a service change.
City water, sewer and utility accounts
Drinking water in Durango comes from the Florida River, supplemented by the Animas River during high-demand summer months.
A property owner can use an Owner Release of Utility Account form to appoint a tenant, business or property manager to receive the utility bill in that party's name and address.
When a property is bought or sold through a local title company, the title company processes the ownership change and final bill payment at closing. Otherwise the new owner uses the Ownership Change of Utility Account form.
Sewage is treated at the Santa Rita Water Reclamation Facility, which the city owns, operates and maintains.
City trash, recycling and bulk pickup
The city's Trash and Recycling division collects residential and commercial garbage and recycling within city limits.
Single-family homes, townhouses and duplexes receive city trash and recycling service, while apartments and condominiums are handled through the city's commercial collection services.
Residential single-stream recycling is collected once per week. A home inside city limits that does not receive city recycling service can call 970-375-5004 to get a blue recycling container.
City bulk pickup is provided to single-family residential homes within city limits; commercial properties do not qualify. Bulk pickups are scheduled and paid for online. Bulk items go out only the night before the scheduled pickup, and items left out with no scheduled pickup may be ticketed by code enforcement.
Transfer station, recycle center and paint disposal
The Durango Transfer Station at 790 Tech Center Dr takes material for the regional Bondad Landfill. It is leased and operated by a private contractor rather than the city.
The Durango Recycle Center takes certain recyclable materials from residents and businesses during the week. Its drop-off glass chutes take glass of all colors and are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Completely dried latex paint can go in the trash.
Schools, transit, dog licenses and rentals
Durango School District handles student registration for new and existing families, with its office at 281 Sawyer Drive, Suite 100.
Durango Transit is run by the city and operates fixed-route trolleys and minibuses, a microtransit fleet and a paratransit fleet. DuranGO! microtransit is a curb-to-curb, on-demand evening bus service within the city limits of Durango.
Durango-La Plata County Airport (DRO) serves southwest Colorado, northwest New Mexico and the Four Corners region. The Durango Public Library keeps a Southwest Collection covering the history of Durango, La Plata County and the Four Corners region.
All dogs in Durango must be licensed annually or triannually through the La Plata County (LPC) Humane Society.
Vacation rentals, meaning dwelling units rented for 1 to 29 days, are allowed only with a Limited Use Permit from the Community Development Department. Rentals of 30 days or longer are not considered vacation rentals and are not regulated as such by the city.
