Moving to Hamilton Township: who to call and what the city asks.

In Hamilton Township, a certificate of occupancy is not required to close on a house, only to occupy it, and that includes moving in personal effects. Residents and businesses get water from Trenton Water Works, a City of Trenton-owned utility, or Aqua NJ, a private, regulated company. The township, in Mercer County, has no rent control.

Garbage and recycling pickup

The township offers curbside garbage collection on two days each week, except on holidays. Curbside recycling for several paper, plastic and glass products is collected once every two weeks and coordinated by the Mercer County Improvement Authority (MCIA). Regular garbage pickup is limited to 7 bags or containers at the curb, counting household garbage.

Bulk items and mattresses at the curb

On your second trash collection day of the week, you may put up to three bulk items at the curb. Mattresses and box springs must be wrapped in plastic to be collected.

Leaves and the Ecological Facility on Kuser Road

Residents can bring leaves to the Ecological Facility on Kuser Road. It is open Monday through Saturday, 8 AM to 3:30 PM, except on Township holidays. In fall, loose leaves must be put in the gutter no more than seven days before scheduled pickup and no closer than ten feet from a storm drain.

Landlord registration and the Certificate of Approval

The township requires all landlords to be registered, whether they own an apartment complex or rent a room in their home. For a rental property, all violations must be corrected before a Certificate of Approval is issued.

School registration, dog licenses and the Municipal Clerk

The Hamilton Township School District collects the documents needed for registration through its online Registration System. Dog licenses for township residents are issued by the Division of Health's Animal Shelter at 2100 Sylvan Avenue. The Municipal Clerk is the township's election official and handles voter registration.

Sewer fees and flood insurance discounts

The township's Division of Revenue Collection collects property taxes and sewer fees. Flood insurance discounts earned through Hamilton's floodplain efforts are applied automatically by a resident's insurance company, and no action is required by the resident.
