Local services and rules

Moving to Huntsville: who to call and what the city asks.

Huntsville Utilities provides natural gas service to customers in Huntsville and Madison County. The same utility operates a citywide fiberoptic network that Google Fiber uses to provide high-speed internet service to residential and business customers.

Downtown meters and Huntsville Connect

Downtown parking meters are enforced Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents can report issues such as graffiti, illegal dumping, potholes, broken parking meters or a found pet through the City's Huntsville Connect service.

Weekly garbage in a 96-gallon cart

The City collects household garbage once a week from a large green cart. Carts go to the curb by 7 a.m. on collection day, and a resident finds the pick-up day by entering an address on the sanitation route page.

The residential garbage fee is $21.50 per month for a 96-gallon cart. Additional carts are $9 per month on a one-year minimum contract.

Residents can request a trash can, suspend service, file a complaint or request off-street service through the City's garbage service request page.

Recycling Alliance cart and the Household Hazardous Waste Facility

Curbside recycling is managed by the Recycling Alliance of North Alabama (RANA), once a month, in a 95-gallon cart that residents register for. The cart goes to the curb by 7 a.m. on pickup day.

Household hazardous waste is not collected curbside; it is handled by the Solid Waste Disposal Authority. The drive-through Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 1055 A Cleaner Way is open Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and accepts items including paints and solvents, pool chemicals and household and car batteries.

Boxes, appliances and tree limbs at the curb

The City accepts boxes, furniture, appliances, household items, tree limbs, junk and yard waste placed out for trash collection. Electrical appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, water heaters and microwaves can be placed on the curb for collection.

Tree limbs up to 10 cubic yards are collected at no charge, and each additional 5 cubic yards costs $55 per collection. The City does not pick up construction debris or debris from a contractor's work.

Water service through Huntsville Utilities

Huntsville Utilities provides water service. New service can be established online or through the My HU Portal, and a non-refundable service charge is required to establish or transfer services.

Unless applying with a STAR ID, two valid, unexpired government-issued forms of identification are required to establish service.

Orbit bus service

The City's bus system, Orbit, runs Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Orbit tickets are sold at the Huntsville Transit Center, 521 Pratt Avenue, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fares include a one-way fare of $1 and a monthly pass at $30.

School enrollment and library cards

At Huntsville City Schools, the Parent Support Center helps families with new student registration, annual returning student enrollment and Parent Portal access.

The Huntsville-Madison County Public Library issues cards free to Huntsville and Madison County residents ages 18 and older; a government-issued photo ID with correct name and permanent address is required.

Pet licenses, property assessments and short-term rentals

Dogs and cats over 4 months old must be registered and licensed each year through the Huntsville Animal Services Shelter at 4950 Triana Boulevard. Licenses for altered pets cost $35 for a lifetime license or $10 for a one-year license.

Madison County property assessments are based on ownership and status as of October 1 of each year; the Tax Assessor's office is at 1918 North Memorial Parkway.

Anyone renting a property short-term must hold a business license from the City of Huntsville; short-term rentals are stays of 179 days or less.
