Local services and rules

Moving to Kearney: who to call and what the city asks.

Kearney is the county seat of Buffalo County, Nebraska. Seasonal yard waste collection begins in early April and runs through the first week of December, weather permitting. Residential recyclables are collected twice per month at the curb.

Weekly trash and the Sanitation Division

Residential refuse is collected once each week. To start, stop or change trash service, or to report a missed collection, contact the Sanitation Division at (308) 233-3206.

A blue recycling container is requested through the same Sanitation Division number, (308) 233-3206.

Banned items and the hazardous waste site

Appliances, tires, lumber, trees and construction or remodeling refuse are not allowed in the garbage containers the city provides. The Sanitation Division at (308) 233-3206 gives disposal guidance for them.

A Household Hazardous Waste Program at 3620 Box Butte Avenue takes items such as motor oil, car batteries, brake fluid, thinner and stripper, and rechargeable batteries.

Nebraska Public Power District and utility bills

Electric power is handled by Nebraska Public Power District, at (877) 275-6773.

Utility bills are due when received and are delinquent if not paid within 20 days from the day they are placed in the mail.

Kearney Public Schools enrollment

New students in grades 9-12 register at Kearney High School in the Guidance Office at 2702 West 11th Street, and can begin the process online. Kearney Public Schools requires proof of residency to enroll: a piece of mail from a company, a rental or lease agreement or a driver's license is accepted, but not a handwritten letter.

Middle school enrollment is a two-step process: register online, then go with the student to the directed middle school to finish enrollment.

Library card and voter registration

A library card can be applied for in person at the library, on the bookmobile, or online. A photo ID and proof of current address are needed to receive and activate it.

Voter registration, address changes and name changes go through the Buffalo County Election Commission, at PO Box 1270 in Kearney.
