Local services and rules
Moving to Mobile: who to call and what the city asks.
Mardi Gras parking restrictions in Mobile apply two hours before, during and two hours after each parade unless otherwise specified, and violating vehicles can be towed. The City of Mobile cannot issue an evacuation order; it shares evacuation orders from the State of Alabama, and its hurricane page links to a tool for finding your evacuation zone.
Downtown Parking Rules and 24-Hour Curb Enforcement
On certain downtown streets, parking is free with a two hour limit; the remaining metered parking is $1.00 an hour.
Downtown, parking in an unlawful area or manner, such as a bus or loading zone, yellow curb, no parking area or handicap space, is enforceable 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
MAWSS Water Deposits and Spire Gas Start-Up
New residential water service through MAWSS needs a minimum security deposit of $100, a service charge fee of $60 for next business day or later, picture identification and a social security number. MAWSS also asks for a valid lease or deed and proof of service from another utility, as it deems necessary.
MAWSS requires someone to be on the premises to sign a service ticket before water is turned on at a private property.
Spire handles gas service in the Mobile area. A new resident can start service through its Turn my gas on/off page.
Weekly Garbage, Every-Other-Week Trash and the 48-Hour Curb Rule
The City of Mobile collects household garbage once a week. Residents can enter an address in the GIS Department's My Place tool to find trash and garbage pick up days.
The City's residential trash collection is every other week. The City defines trash as tree limbs, tree and yard debris, discarded furniture and bedding. It prohibits putting a trash pile at the curb more than 48 hours before the scheduled pickup day.
Electronics and appliances do not go on the regular trash pile; call 208-5311 to place a work order for an electronics or appliance pickup. The City removes residential trash over the 2 cubic yard curb limit for a charge that depends on the size of the pile.
Recycling Drop-Off Sites and Household Hazardous Waste Events
The City runs recycling drop-off locations at 4851 Museum Drive, 308 Pinehill Drive and 1750 Dauphin Island Parkway, for City of Mobile residents only. The recycling centers' electronics bins do not take TVs of any kind.
The City hosts Household Hazardous Waste Collection events for residents to discard items it cannot collect in routine service, such as automotive fluids, aerosols, herbicides, fertilizers, fluorescent tubes, paint, cleaners, pesticides and batteries.
Mobile County Public School System Enrollment Papers
A student new to the Mobile County Public School System must present a parent or guardian photo ID, a certified birth certificate, an Alabama-issued certificate of immunization and two proofs of residence at enrollment.
A child who is five on or before September 1 or the date school begins is entitled to admission to kindergarten in the public elementary schools.
Second Line Transit, Formerly the Wave, and Mobile Airport Authority Airlines
Mobile's public transit is Second Line Transit, which was formerly called the Wave. It runs fixed bus routes and a microtransit zone.
The Mobile Airport Authority offers passenger service with American Airlines, Delta and United.
Mobile Public Library Cards and Voter Registration at Government Street
Free Mobile Public Library cards are available to anyone who owns property or permanently resides in Mobile County, has a Mobile County business license, or is a college student living in the county. To get a card, bring a current government issued photo ID and proof of your local home address to any Mobile Public Library location or the Bookmobile.
Voter registration is handled by the Mobile County Board of Registrars at 151 Government Street, Room 165.
City Dog License Fees and Property Tax Due Dates
A City dog license is bought at Animal Services from 12 to 4 pm on weekdays or renewed by mail; fees are $3.00 for a spayed or neutered dog and $15.00 for an unaltered dog. Buying a license requires current proof of rabies vaccination.
Mobile County property taxes are due each October 1st and are delinquent after December 31st of the same year; the county names its Revenue Commission as the department that handles them.
The City's Revenue Department administers its privilege license tax ordinances, collecting monthly sales and use taxes and licensing businesses and professions.
