Moving to Murray: who to call and what the city asks.

Electricity in Murray comes from Murray City Power, a publicly owned municipal electric utility. Billing questions and starting or stopping service go through Utility Customer Service at 801-264-2626. A new owner or occupant is responsible for bringing a property into compliance if code violations such as weeds or inoperable vehicles already exist. The city also publishes a map of fireworks restricted areas, where fireworks are not allowed.

Snow parking and the 72-hour limit

Under the city code on street parking, parking on any street is unlawful from one hour after snowfall begins until snow removal on that street is finished, and a vehicle in violation may be impounded. The same code says a vehicle may not be parked on a street for more than 72 consecutive hours.

Loading hours between 10:00 P.M. and 7:00 A.M.

Murray's noise ordinance makes it unlawful, between 10:00 P.M. and 7:00 A.M., to load, unload or handle boxes, crates, containers and building materials in a way that creates a noise disturbance in a residential area.

Dumpsters, the Trans-Jordan Landfill and hazardous waste sites

A dumpster for general debris and residential clean-up can be rented through Murray City. Delivery and pick-up is between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. Separately, the neighborhood 20-yard dumpster program is closed for the season and resumes April 1st, 2027.

Murray partners with other cities in the Trans-Jordan Cities landfill at 10473 South Bacchus Highway, where loads must be fully tarped and secured to avoid a double charge.

Murray City Public Works no longer takes household hazardous waste. It should go to the Salt Lake Valley Solid Waste Management Facility at 6030 West California Avenue, Trans Jordan Landfill at 10473 S Bacchus Highway, or the HHW Collection Center at 8805 South 700 West.

Water, sewer, Ace Disposal and UTOPIA Fiber

Murray City provides power, water, sewer, garbage and stormwater utilities in many areas of the city; other providers serve areas without city-owned infrastructure. The Utility Billing office at (801) 264-2626 can say who serves a given property. A new sewer user with no water-use history is billed the average charge of a like and similar user until a history exists.

The City contracts with Ace Disposal for garbage pick-up in most of the City; some areas are served by Wasatch Front Waste & Recycling District. Ace Disposal customer service is (801) 363-9995. For Ace Disposal customers, recycling is collected on the same day as garbage, on a biweekly schedule that depends on location in the city.

Murray partners with UTOPIA Fiber, an open-access fiber network on which several internet service providers operate.

Murray City School District and Murray City Library

Murray City School District handles new-student registration at 801-264-7400. Enrolment needs proof of legal Utah residency, such as a utility bill or apartment lease.

Murray City Library is at 166 East 5300 South. To get a card, fill out the form, then come in with a government issued photo ID and proof of current address.

The UTA station list includes Murray Central at 5144 S. Cottonwood St. and Murray North at 71 W. Fireclay Ave., and a Murray Central station at 140 W. Vine St.

Pet licenses and property tax questions

Salt Lake County Animal Services serves Murray, and pet licensing is handled by the county. The service says pets must be licensed and the license renewed yearly. Questions about property taxes go to the County Treasurer at (385) 468-8300.

Short-term rentals

Murray allows only hosted short-term rentals, where the owner is present for the guest's whole stay. Short-Term Rentals are prohibited in accessory dwelling units.
