Local services and rules
Moving to North Charleston: who to call and what the city asks.
North Charleston lies within Dorchester, Berkeley and Charleston counties. The City's Sanitation Division will only pick up yard waste in paper bags for curbside pickup.
Roll carts and garbage collection day
The Sanitation Division handles garbage and trash removal for all areas within the City limits and the North Charleston District. Public Works at (843) 745-1026 gives the pickup day for an address. Trash and garbage are picked up curbside once a week, and the day depends on where in the city the household lives.
Household garbage goes in the roll cart containers provided by the City, set at street side before 7:00 am on collection day. A household may purchase one additional garbage roll cart for a one-time fee of $65.
Furniture, appliances and building materials at the curb
The City collects furniture and small amounts of construction debris at the curb when they are placed in a separate pile. The limit is a maximum of 90 gallons of building materials per pick up.
Appliances such as refrigerators and freezers are collected at the curb, but their doors must be removed first. The City does not pick up electronic waste such as TVs and computers.
Recycling in Charleston County and Dorchester County
Recycling in the parts of North Charleston that lie in Charleston County is collected curbside by Charleston County.
In the parts of North Charleston that lie in Dorchester County, recycling is picked up on the same day as garbage and yard waste. Residents there also drop off recyclables at the county's Convenience Sites.
Charleston County household hazardous waste
Charleston County Environmental Management has convenience centers where Charleston County residents can drop off household hazardous waste. Paint, paint thinner, rust remover, turpentine and furniture stripper can be recycled at any Charleston County convenience center.
North Charleston Sewer District and the $35.00 origin fee
Customers billed directly by North Charleston Sewer District start sewer service by filling out a New Customer Information Form. The district charges a $35.00 origin fee for new accounts.
If Charleston Water, Summerville CPW or the Town of Lincolnville is the water provider, the household contacts that provider to begin sewer service.
