Local services and rules
Moving to South Burlington: who to call and what the city asks.
South Burlington is a city in Chittenden County, Vermont. Single family homes may keep up to six chickens and no roosters, and a Backyard Chicken Permit is required. Garage and yard sales need no permit and are limited to 8 days per year for any given property.
Winter parking ban and street sweeping
A winter parking ban runs from December 1 to April 1. During the ban there is no parking on city-owned streets from midnight to 8 am. The ban is not enforced on private streets.
All curbed streets are swept every spring and fall.
Water and sewer through the Champlain Water District contract
The city water division runs the water distribution system under a contract with the Champlain Water District.
The water department also does the billing for wastewater and stormwater. Bills go to the owner of record unless a written landlord-tenant request form is filed.
Water and sewer bills are processed quarterly and sent out on the 15th of the month.
Electric, gas and trash from private companies
Electric and natural gas service come from privately owned utility companies, not from the city.
Residential and commercial trash removal is provided by privately owned services. The solid waste and recycling drop-off center on Landfill Road is operated by the Chittenden Solid Waste District.
School registration, library cards and voter applications
The South Burlington School District registers new students online, and all required documents must be on file before a student can attend.
Any legal resident over the age of five can get a resident library card with identification showing name and current legal address. A resident card from the South Burlington Public Library also works at the other libraries in the Homecard cooperative lending system around Chittenden County.
The City Clerk's office processes voter applications and mails a confirmation once an application is processed.
Property tax, cat registration and the rental registry
Property tax payments can be mailed, dropped off in person, or left in the after-hours drop box at the right of the main door at City Hall.
Cats must be registered annually under a city ordinance.
Rental owners must complete a rental registry form for each of their rental units.
