Moving to Wisconsin Rapids: who to call and what the city asks.

Wisconsin Rapids is the county seat of Wood County, on the Wisconsin River. Garbage and recycling carts are delivered to each residential address, so new residents do not pick one up. When a household moves out, the carts stay at the address they were delivered to.

Permit parking and snow rules

Permit parking is offered in municipal parking lots and select on-street areas. Permits are rented annually and are valid from September 1 to August 31. They are applied for at the Engineering Department on the second floor of City Hall.

Property owners must clear snow and ice from their sidewalks within 24 hours of a snowfall. Removed snow may not be pushed, thrown or blown onto city streets.

Electric, water and stormwater through one commission

The Water Works & Lighting Commission is the municipally owned and operated utility providing electric and water service in the area. New customers, and those moving between addresses, submit an application for service.

Stormwater charges are billed monthly through the Water Works and Lighting Commission.

Gray garbage carts and green recycling carts

Residences of four living units or less are provided a gray garbage cart and a green recycling cart. Garbage is collected every week and recycling every other week.

Carts go out on the curb before 6 a.m. on pickup day, but no sooner than 24 hours before pickup. Collections following a holiday are delayed one day.

Brush, yard waste and the compost sites

Brush is collected curbside during the last full week of each month from April through October. Yard waste pickup in paper bags happens once in the spring and two times in the fall.

The East Side and West Side compost sites accept leaves, grass clippings, garden waste, brush and tree limbs. A compost pass is required at the sites. City residents obtain tags at the Street Department with photo ID, proof of residency and vehicle license plate number.

Furniture, mattresses and appliances that do not fit in the garbage cart need to be disposed of privately. Old mercury thermostats and other small mercury-containing items are accepted at the Wood County Health Department in Wisconsin Rapids.

City pet license and leash rule

Cats and dogs over 5 months old must have a City Pet License. With it, up to four sterilized or three unsterilized dogs or cats may be kept, and additional pets need a Pet Exemption Permit.

Dogs and cats away from the owner's premises must be leashed, and dog walkers must clean up after the animal.

Polling places, property tax payment and the shared-ride taxi

West Side voters, and those in the Red area on the city map, vote at the Centralia Center, 220 3rd Ave. S. East Side voters, except those in the Red area, vote at East Junior High School Field House, 311 Lincoln St.

Property tax payments can be made online, by mail, in the drop box in front of City Hall, or in person at the Finance Department.
