Local services and rules

Moving to Burbank: who to call and what the city asks.

Burbank, in the eastern part of the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County, has adopted an ordinance prohibiting gas-powered leaf blowers within the City. Large non-commercial vehicles such as RVs cannot be parked on Burbank streets except under limited circumstances to facilitate loading and unloading, and a vehicle over 22 feet long, 8 feet high or 8 feet wide counts as one.

Public Works permits, street sweeping and resident parking

The Public Works permit counter, at 150 North Third Street, handles permits including Encroachment and Street Use. Appointments are made at (818) 238-3950 or pwonlinecounter@burbankca.gov.

Residential street sweeping runs Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., except on City holidays, according to the City's street sweeping page.

On residential streets with posted parking restrictions, residents may obtain annual residential parking permits that let vehicles registered to their home address park beyond the posted restrictions. Visitor permits are also available. Proof of residency is checked through Burbank Water and Power accounts, and the application is made by emailing parking@burbankca.gov.

Burbank Water and Power: electric, water and sewer

Burbank Water and Power (BWP) is the community-owned utility that provides electric and water service to customers in the City of Burbank. New service is started through BWP, whose call center number is (818) 238-3700.

The City runs the sewer system through Public Works, and residents and businesses pay a Sewer Service charge.

When a new resident signs up for electrical service with BWP, BWP also signs them up for trash, green waste and recycling service.

Blue, green and black City containers

Single-family homes and multi-family buildings of four units or fewer receive three City containers: blue for recycling, green for green waste and black for trash, as the trash FAQ lays out.

Collection runs Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The collection day for an address is found on the City's trash collection schedule map.

Residents who move out are asked to leave the City-issued containers at the residence. Public Works Field Services handles container questions, and extra or different-size containers, at (818) 238-3800.

Bulky item pickup and extra collections

Bulky item pickup is requested on the Our Burbank 311 portal at least two business days before the normal trash day, with a picture of the item. The other route is by phone at (818) 238-3800 at least one business day before.

Bulky items may not be put out until the night before the trash collection day. They must sit at least five feet from fixed objects, and doors must be removed from refrigerators.

Bulky items are sent to the landfill, except electronics, metal appliances, mattresses and box springs, so the City asks residents to use this option last.

An extra pickup of trash, recyclables or organics can be scheduled on a weekday other than the regular collection day. It uses City-issued containers, with a fee per container charged to the BWP account.

The Drop Zone at 500 South Flower Street and free sandbags

The Burbank Recycle Center, 500 South Flower Street, accepts specific kinds of household hazardous waste from Burbank residents at its Drop Zone, Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM. The phone is (818) 238-3900. The Drop Zone does not accept motor oil and filters, paint, chemicals or medical waste.

The City's street maintenance division manages flood control, including placing sandbags, offering free sandbags to residents, and cleaning storm drains.

Burbank Unified enrollment and library cards

Burbank Unified School District serves Burbank residents. A new student is not officially enrolled until the school of residence has reviewed and checked all documents in person. To finalize registration there, families bring a current Burbank Water and Power bill and either a So Cal Gas bill or a landline telephone bill, plus proof of age, an immunization record and the parent or guardian's driver's license.

Residents and non-residents of Burbank are eligible for a free Burbank Public Library card. A permanent card needs photographic proof of identity and proof of residence, applied for at a Library location.

Pet limits, the City Clerk and the Landlord Tenant Commission

Burbank allows a total of four dogs and cats combined, and each animal must be registered with the City.

The Burbank City Clerk's Office, at (818) 238-5851, answers questions about city elections. The County of Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder / County Clerk is at 12400 Imperial Hwy., Norwalk.

Burbank has a volunteer Landlord Tenant Commission that provides information on residential landlord-tenant issues. It has no legal authority.

BurbankBus, the Burbank Channel and Hollywood Burbank Airport

BurbankBus runs local fixed routes, the Pink and Orange routes, with a one-way fare of $1.

The Burbank Channel, the City's government access channel, is carried on Spectrum Channel 6 and AT&T U-Verse Channel 99.

Hollywood Burbank Airport describes itself as the gateway to Los Angeles.
