Local services and rules

Moving to Jamestown: who to call and what the city asks.

Jamestown is in southern Chautauqua County, New York. The Board of Public Utilities (BPU) supplies water and wastewater service and also handles electric, solid waste and district heating. Signs at city entrances inform drivers of the alternate parking law, which uses even and odd property address numbers to set the side of the street.

Parking permits and street rules

Construction Parking, Utility Parking and Block Party permits are applied for in person at the City Clerk's Office in the Municipal Building. Off-street parking permits for city lots and garages are arranged through Allpro Parking at (716) 484-7561.

In the downtown Congested District, parking is generally prohibited from 2 A.M. to 7 A.M., with exceptions. Property owners are responsible for keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice.

BPU sign-up at 92 Steele Street

Applications for BPU service are made in person at its business offices at 92 Steele Street. Community fiber internet is offered through the BPU.

Garbage and recycling collection

Garbage and recycling collection is managed by the BPU. The BPU Garbage Hotline is (716) 661-1651. Containers are set out with the handle facing the street after 4 p.m. the night before the scheduled collection day.

Items larger than a bag of trash, or that one employee cannot easily handle, are special collections that carry a fee. Examples listed include furniture, mattresses (must be dry), televisions, carpet rolls and major appliances. The BPU does not collect appliances containing Freon, such as refrigerators, air conditioners, freezers and dehumidifiers.

Yard waste, glass and hazardous waste drop-off

A seasonal yard waste site at 1001 Monroe St accepts leaves, grass clippings, brush and small twigs. Contractors are not permitted to use it. Glass recyclables go to the County Transfer Stations rather than the curbside recycling rotation. Chautauqua County sponsors a Household Hazardous Waste Collection program for county residents.

Jamestown Public Schools registration

Enrollment in Jamestown Public Schools starts with a call to the Central Registration Office, open 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM, at 716-483-4344. A lease, mortgage statement or tax bill serves as proof of residence.

Rental registration and the six wards

Owners of residential rental property register with the City Clerk annually by February 1, or within thirty days of transferring a property. Six representative wards make up the city, named College, Lakeview, Chadakoin, Bergman Park, Forest and Willard Heights.

Jamestown Airport and Prendergast Library

The Jamestown Airport (JHW) is one of two public general aviation airports operated by Chautauqua County. The James Prendergast Library, at 509 Cherry St., is a member of the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Library System.
