Local services and rules

Moving to Jefferson City: who to call and what the city asks.

Jefferson City is the county seat of Cole County. Most of the city lies in Cole County, with a small northern section in adjacent Callaway County. A dwelling may hold no more than two garage sales within any calendar year. A garage sale may not last more than three days, and sales may not be held between 8:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.

Police Department permits to back a truck to the curb

The Police Department may issue special permits to back a vehicle to the curb to load or unload merchandise or materials. Each permit carries its own terms and conditions.

Residential permit parking zones

In a designated residential permit parking zone, residents receive on application one permit per vehicle they own and up to three visitor passes, with applicable fees paid. Applicants show proof of occupancy and vehicle registration for each vehicle. The permit sticker comes from the Public Works Department.

Snow routes and winter storm work areas

During winter storm operations or an emergency, stopping or parking in a way that obstructs traffic on a designated snow route is prohibited, and an obstructing vehicle may be removed. The City Administrator or a designee may temporarily remove parking from winter storm work areas. Those areas are signed and posted eight hours beforehand if possible.

Trash service and recycling bins under the solid waste code

Residential trash, other than bulky rubbish, is collected at least once weekly under the city solid waste code, which uses a collector the city has contracted with. The owner of the property is responsible for making sure trash service is obtained and kept up during all times the property is occupied.

Trash containers and recycling bins may not stay on City right-of-way for more than 24 consecutive hours consistent with the day of collection. Residential trash containers must be leak-proof, waterproof, and fitted with a fly-tight lid, and kept covered or closed except when waste is being put in or taken out.

Recyclable materials, but not yard waste, placed in or next to recycling containers at the curbside on public streets are collected from all residences located in the City.

Bulky rubbish and items kept out of the bins

Bulky rubbish is collected at least once annually, and at more frequent intervals if the health officer sets them. Electronic waste, household hazardous waste, white goods, glass, compostable materials and yard waste are not counted as solid waste or recyclable materials. None of these may go in a solid waste bin or recycling bin.

Animal rules and landlord registration

An animal must be kept in a securely fenced yard or secured with a leash, rope, or chain, and not left to run at large anywhere in the City. An owner may not let an animal excrete on sidewalks, driveways, right-of-way, or other private property, and is responsible for cleaning it up.

For rentals, no one may rent, lease or offer to rent or lease residential rental property in the City of Jefferson without registering as a landlord. Owners of rental dwellings register with the City every year, and registrations expire on December 31.
