Local services and rules

Moving to Joplin: who to call and what the city asks.

Joplin lies partly in Jasper County and partly in Newton County. Residential and private streets are not plowed in snow. Under the animal control code, roosters are prohibited.

Street sweeping and sidewalk upkeep

Sidewalks are maintained by the adjacent property owner or business owner.

Streets are swept on rotation through city zones, and sweeping can be requested through Public Works or the SeeClickFix reporting portal.

Republic Services trash collection

Residential trash for every house, duplex and approved apartment house is collected only by Republic Services under a franchise contract with the City.

When a collection day falls on or after a holiday, service is delayed by one day.

Four bulk collections a year

Each resident can schedule up to four bulk collections per calendar year at no additional cost, arranged through Republic Services. Bulk collections have to be scheduled in advance.

Drop-off sites at 1310 West A Street

Residents may haul recyclables and household hazardous waste to the free recycling center at 1310 W. A Street.

Household hazardous waste is accepted at the Drop-Off Recycling Center from residents of McDonald, Newton, Jasper, Barton and Vernon Counties, with proper identification required.

A free limb and brush drop-off runs on the third Saturday of each month from March through November and the Friday before, for residents only.

Missouri-American Water and the city utility bill

Water service is handled by Missouri-American Water Company, not by the city.

Wastewater service is provided by the City, and the Engineering Division is the contact for starting it.

The City's utility bill covers sewer and trash, and it can be viewed and paid online through a Citizen Access Portal where auto pay can also be set up.

Property taxes and the county collectors

Property taxes are collected by the county collector (Jasper or Newton County), not by the City.

City pet licenses and small-animal permits

Dogs and cats over four months old need a City license under the animal control code.

Licenses are issued at City Hall, 602 S. Main, on the 3rd floor at the Finance Department. The license is free for a spayed or neutered animal.

Keeping small animals such as rabbits or chickens at a residence requires a permit under the animal control code.

Trolley, airport, storm shelters and code enforcement

The Sunshine Lamp Trolley runs Monday through Friday from 6:00am to 6pm. Trolley runs start at the top of every hour from the stop listed on the route schedule.

Joplin Regional Airport is owned and operated by the City and serves commercial, military, cargo and general aviation for southwestern Missouri. Airport parking is in front of the Commercial Passenger Terminal at 7331 N. Highway 43, and short-term and long-term parking are free.

Property owners with a storm shelter in the city can register its location with the Joplin Police Department through a Storm Shelter Inventory form.

Weeds, trash, tall grass and other property nuisances are reported to the Code Enforcement Officer.
