Local services and rules

Moving to Morristown: who to call and what the city asks.

In Morristown, Morristown Utilities supplies power within the city limits, and the same utility provides water service within the city limits. Internet comes from the same place: FiberNet, a fiber optic system built and managed by Morristown Utility Systems, offers video, internet and telephone service to residents of Morristown. Natural gas is the exception. It is available from Atmos Energy, a private distributor serving customers in Morristown and Hamblen County. Morristown is the county seat of Hamblen County, Tennessee.

Building-work hours, the loading noise rule and the $50.00 fine

Under the Morristown code of ordinances, building work in residential zones is allowed only between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. The list of covered work includes excavation, demolition, alteration, repair and street construction. The one exception is for emergencies, and those need a permit from the building inspector.

The same code prohibits any loud and excessive noise in connection with loading or unloading a vehicle. A noise violation is a misdemeanor punishable by a $50.00 fine for each violation, plus court costs.

Streets posted against commercial vehicles over 35,000 pounds

Under the city's vehicle and traffic code, where signs are posted, commercial vehicles over 35,000 pounds gross weight may not use streets designated by the city administrator. The exception is for vehicles delivering or picking up materials or merchandise.

The MU service request form and the deposits

Water, power and FiberNET service start with an MU service request form. The Morristown Utilities customer service line is open 24/7 at (423) 586-4121 for emergencies and service needs. MU/FiberNET accepts new service applications online or in person at its office at 433 W. 1st North St., Morristown, TN 37814.

A new service request needs copies of 2 valid IDs: 1 photo ID and 1 to verify the social security number.

The deposit schedule sets the residential electric deposit at $300.00, and customers with a satisfactory credit score are not charged a deposit. If no social security number is provided, an additional $100 deposit is required. The residential water deposit is $50.00 inside the city and $50.00 in the county.

Sewer service comes from the Morristown Utilities Wastewater Department, which serves the City of Morristown and parts of Hamblen County.
