Local services and rules

Moving to Santa Maria: who to call and what the city asks.

Santa Maria is a city in Santa Barbara County, California. The City does not offer curbside pickup of bulky items; that service was replaced with the Free Landfill Pass program. Water service is mandatory in the City of Santa Maria, and its water comes from two sources, local groundwater and imported State Water.

Starting City service at the Utility Billing Division

A new resident starts City utility service in person at the Utility Billing Division at the City Hall Annex, 206 East Cook Street, with a photo ID and Social Security number. The City does not require a deposit to start utility service, though a new account set up charge is added to the first utility bill.

To start all City services, a new resident visits the City of Santa Maria Finance Department at the same address. Refuse service is required whenever the residence or business is occupied, and a resident signs up for it with the City's utility services.

Recycling containers, collection days and holiday delays

After signing up for services, a resident gets a recycling container or a green waste container by calling the City's Solid Waste Division at (805) 925-0951 ext 7270.

The City's web app finds a household's regular collection day, and recycle pickup is every other week. When a holiday falls on a weekday, residential collection is delayed by one day for the rest of that week.

The Santa Maria Regional Landfill

Santa Maria customers with residential trash service on 60- or 90-gallon carts get one free landfill pass per service address each year, good for non-hazardous bulky items such as furniture and white goods up to 1,000 pounds.

Residents may bring up to five mattresses or box springs for free to the Santa Maria Regional Landfill at 2065 East Main Street, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Saturday. The landfill also accepts up to five e-waste items for free, Monday to Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Residents can bring household hazardous waste, such as paint, for free to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at the landfill. The limit is 15 gallons of liquid waste or 125 pounds of dry waste per trip, in containers no larger than five gallons each.

Limited time zone parking permits and street sweeping

Residents and businesses in a limited time parking zone may buy parking permits that exempt their vehicle from the limited time zone. Permits are sold at the City Finance Department, City Hall Annex, up to 5 per residence, with proof of residency such as a utility bill or tenant agreement.

Street sweeping in most areas of Santa Maria happens every other week according to a City map.

Schools of residence, SMRT buses and library cards

The Santa Maria-Bonita School District assigns each residence within its boundary one or more schools of residence.

The City runs Santa Maria Regional Transit (SMRT), with fixed route, microtransit and ADA paratransit bus service.

A Santa Maria Public Library card is available by applying online or in person at any branch with a government issued picture I.D. and a recent document or bill showing your current address if it is not on the I.D.
