0:00A $12,000 estimate that doubled
Moving to North Carolina? Start with what one mom says happened on her way to Charlotte.
In early 2025, a Charlotte TV station told the story of a woman moving her family from Chicago. She says a mover looked over her home on a video call and estimated about twelve thousand dollars. Then, she says, the price went to eighteen thousand. After a walk-through, it became twenty-four thousand. Double the estimate. The family had to be out of the house the next day, so she paid. The station said the company didn't respond before the report aired.
Coming up: how long the truck takes, a fair price from five cities, the best and worst months, moving day in Charlotte and Raleigh, and what North Carolina wants once you arrive.
I'm Daniel, from Majestic Moving Companies. Our team has more than thirty-five years in the moving industry. Let's get into it.
0:49Movers to Charlotte or Raleigh: 3 to 10 days
How long do movers take to deliver? On a move to North Carolina, it depends which side of five hundred miles you start on.
For a regional move, up to five hundred road miles, our calculator shows one to two days in transit. Past that, three to ten days.
From New York City, Raleigh is about four hundred and ninety road miles, and Charlotte is about six hundred and twenty-five. From Boston, Chicago, Miami and Dallas, both are well past five hundred.
Why days, when the drive itself is hours? Federal rules let a truck driver drive at most eleven hours, then require ten hours off. Boston to Charlotte is about eight hundred and thirty-five road miles. Even at seventy miles an hour, that's two days on the road. From Los Angeles, about twenty-four hundred miles, it's at least four.
So ask every mover for two dates in writing: the first day your things can arrive, and the last. Our New York to Florida video covers what a mover owes you if it misses them.
Plan your first week around the last date, not the first.
1:51What a move to Charlotte costs from 5 cities
How much does it cost to move to North Carolina? Our calculator gives a fair range for each route. Here it is from five cities, for a two-bedroom home that you pack yourself, between October and April.
New York City to Charlotte is about six hundred and twenty-five road miles. That's thirty-four hundred to fifty-three hundred dollars. To Raleigh, about four hundred and ninety, it's twenty-nine fifty to forty-six fifty.
Miami to Charlotte, about seven hundred and twenty-five road miles: thirty-five hundred to fifty-five hundred.
Boston to Charlotte, about eight hundred and thirty-five: thirty-six fifty to fifty-six fifty.
Dallas to Charlotte, about a thousand and twenty-five: thirty-eight fifty to six thousand.
Los Angeles to Charlotte, about twenty-four hundred: fifty-three fifty to eighty-three fifty.
Between May and September, our calculator puts each of those about eighteen percent higher. New York to Charlotte becomes four thousand to sixty-two fifty. Full packing by the movers adds roughly thirty-five percent.
Raleigh is the shorter haul from the Northeast. Charlotte is closer to Florida, Texas and the West.
If the price climbs once the truck is loaded, federal rules cap what the mover may collect at delivery. Our video on mover costs explains them.
Write down your route's range before the first salesperson calls.

3:33Best time to move to NC: April or late October
What's the best time to move to North Carolina? Two things can wreck a moving day here: heat and storms.
Heat first. In Charlotte and Raleigh, the normal high in July is about ninety degrees. In the summer of 2026, Raleigh reached a hundred and three twice.
Then storms. Hurricane season lasts from June through November, and the National Hurricane Center puts its peak at September tenth. Does Charlotte get hurricanes? In 1989, Hugo's gusts were still hurricane-force there, nearly two hundred miles from the ocean. But in recent storms, the trouble for a moving truck was the highway. In September 2018, flooding from Hurricane Florence closed parts of Interstate ninety-five for about a week. In September 2024, Hurricane Helene washed out Interstate forty at the Tennessee line. It stayed closed for about five months. Two years later, it was still down to one lane each way.
Now price. In our calculator, a move between May and September costs about eighteen percent more.
April and late October bring normal highs in the low seventies and off-season prices, away from the storm peak.
So if you can choose, pick April or late October, and ask your mover what happens if a storm closes the road.
4:50Moving truck permits in Charlotte and Raleigh
Do you need a parking permit for a moving truck? In Charlotte, yes, if the truck takes up a lane of a city street.
Charlotte's transportation department says anyone occupying a traffic lane or sidewalk for more than five minutes needs a right-of-way use permit. Moving vans are on its list of examples. The city says to allow seventy-two hours, and there's a fee. Uptown adds a rule. On weekdays, large and medium commercial vehicles can't stop or park on the street from seven to nine in the morning, or four to six in the evening. The citation is a hundred dollars.
In Raleigh, you ask the city for temporary no-parking signs at least five business days ahead. The city warns that the signs don't promise an empty space.
Then there's the building. One Uptown Charlotte condo building wants moves booked fourteen days ahead, on weekdays only, with a two-hundred-and-fifty-dollar fee plus an equal refundable deposit. One Raleigh condo building charges three hundred dollars to move in, and allows no truck longer than twenty-eight feet.
Those are two buildings, not a rule. So ask yours for its move-in policy in writing, book the elevator, and settle with your mover who applies for the street permit.
6:01Hiring movers in Charlotte: check the C number
How do you hire movers in Charlotte without getting burned? Know which regulator your mover answers to, and what happened in July 2026.
A woman had hired a company to move her furniture from Ohio to Craven County, in eastern North Carolina. According to the sheriff's office there, the company wouldn't unload until she paid more. Warrants put the demand at fifty-two hundred dollars, for belongings valued at twenty thousand. She called the sheriff instead. The next day, investigators were waiting at her house when the mover arrived. A seventy-year-old man was arrested and charged with four felonies, including extortion. The sheriff's office said he was involved in a similar case in Raleigh the day before. Those are charges, not a conviction.
A move across state lines falls under federal rules. Look up the mover's U.S. D.O.T. number with the federal regulator.
If you're moving within North Carolina, say Charlotte to Raleigh, the mover needs a certificate from the state Utilities Commission, called a C number. The Commission says certified movers must display it on the truck. It updates its list every month, and it caps what they can charge. An uncertified mover risks a thousand-dollar citation per job.
No number, no deal.
7:13North Carolina DMV: 60 days, 3 steps in order
How long do you have to register your car in North Carolina after moving? The license comes first, and it has its own deadline.
The state DMV gives new residents sixty days to get a North Carolina license.
Step one is North Carolina car insurance. The DMV asks for proof of it when you apply for the license, and it doesn't accept policies from other states. Step two is the license. Bring your old one, your Social Security card, and a document showing your new address. The DMV says the written and road tests may be waived if your current license is valid. In 2026, the fee is six dollars and fifty cents a year, so fifty-two dollars for the usual eight-year license.
Step three is the car, at a separate license plate agency. The DMV's headline says sixty days for that too. But the same page says to register when you take a job, or when your old state's grace period ends, usually thirty days, whichever comes first.
You can register without an inspection. That comes before your first renewal. And since October 2026, North Carolina no longer hands out plate stickers or printed registration cards.
Appointments open only seven days ahead, so start looking the week you arrive.
8:26NC car tax: $250 once, then every year
Does North Carolina have a vehicle property tax? Yes. And a second car tax meets you at the counter.
That one is the highway-use tax, charged in place of sales tax when North Carolina issues your title. It's three percent of the car's value: nine hundred dollars on a thirty-thousand-dollar car. But state law caps it at two hundred and fifty dollars if the car has been titled in your name in another state for at least ninety days. A car you bought last month doesn't get the cap.
The other tax comes every year. Counties and cities tax your car's value, and the state bills it with your registration renewal. For the tax year that began in July 2026, the combined rate inside Charlotte is about seventy-nine cents per hundred dollars of value. Inside Raleigh, about ninety-one cents. On a thirty-thousand-dollar car, that's roughly two hundred and thirty-six dollars a year in Charlotte, and two hundred and seventy-three in Raleigh, before local vehicle fees.
New residents owe it in the first year too, though the DMV lets you defer it sixty days with a limited registration plate.
So budget for the car twice: once at the counter, and again every year.
9:32Cost of living in North Carolina: 6% below average
What's the cost of living in North Carolina? There's a federal price index for that, from the Bureau of Economic Analysis.
On its 2024 figures, prices across North Carolina ran about six percent below the national average. The Charlotte area ran about three percent below, and the Raleigh area about two.
By comparison, the New York area ran about thirteen percent above average. Boston, about eight. Miami, about fourteen.
Now housing. In the Census Bureau's 2020-to-2024 survey, median rent was close to sixteen hundred dollars a month in both cities, against about fourteen hundred nationally. Owner-occupied homes had a median value of about three hundred and eighty-six thousand dollars in Charlotte, and four hundred and sixteen thousand in Raleigh.
Then taxes. For the 2026 tax year, North Carolina's income tax is a flat three point nine nine percent. Since July 2026, Charlotte's county charges eight and a quarter percent sales tax, and Raleigh's charges seven and a quarter.
So both cities cost less than the big coastal metros. But they sit close to the national average, and neither is cheap on rent.
Price your own rent before you price the move.
