Local services and rules
Moving to Blue Springs: who to call and what the city asks.
Blue Springs is a city in Jackson County, Missouri, east of Kansas City. Fire and ambulance service comes from two districts: Central Jackson County Fire Protection District covers most of the city, and Southern Jackson County Fire Protection District covers the southern portion. The city allows backyard hens on single-family residential and qualifying agricultural properties under three acres, with an approved Residential Backyard Hen Permit. Trash is handled by private haulers that the city licenses, not by the city itself.
Snow and ice rules on city streets
The Blue Springs Public Works department keeps a 24-hour state of readiness for snow and ice from mid-November to mid-April. Under the municipal code, property owners are responsible for maintaining sidewalks and keeping them free from snow and ice.
Trash, recycling and bulky items
On the day of pickup, trash containers go no more than five feet from the residence, not at the curb. Several haulers offer recycling collection at individual homes, and the city page says to call the haulers directly for options and pricing. Some private haulers also accept certain bulky items for curbside pickup for a fee, so residents contact their hauler directly.
Glass food and beverage containers can be recycled at the Price Chopper stores on NW 7 Hwy. and SW 7 Hwy. in Blue Springs, in the large purple recycling bin.
Household hazardous waste drop-off
Residents can bring household hazardous waste such as paint, cleaners, automotive fluids and lawn and garden chemicals to either of two collection facilities free of charge. Collection events are held April through October.
Evergy, Spire and cable providers
The city's local utility companies page lists Evergy as the electricity provider, with phone 888-471-5275, for all zip codes in the city. It lists Spire as the natural gas provider, with phone 800-582-1234, for zip codes 64014, 64015, 64029 and 64064.
The city lists cable, phone and internet providers by zip code, including Comcast Cable, AT&T and CenturyLink.
Water and sewer from the city in select areas
The City of Blue Springs provides water and sewer service to select areas within the city limits. The city purchases its water from Kansas City, Mo., Independence, Mo., and Tri-County Water Authority.
School districts and the Resident Guide
Families and students inside the city limits are served by public school districts including Blue Springs R-4, Lee's Summit R-7 and Grain Valley R-5. The city also publishes a Resident Guide for new residents with a directory of services, elected officials, city contact information and emergency contacts.
Library cards, voter registration, pets and rentals
Most people who live in the Kansas City metro area or nearby Missouri counties can apply online for a Mid-Continent Public Library card. To check out physical materials after registering online, a new cardholder visits any branch and shows staff a photo ID.
Jackson County residents outside the City of Kansas City register to vote in person at the Jackson County Election Board office at 215 N. Liberty, Independence, or at other authorized locations.
Blue Springs requires current rabies vaccinations for animals but does not require city pet licenses. Anyone who wants to operate a short-term rental must complete the city registration process and get a business license before operating.
OATS Transit rides
OATS Transit runs rides within the city limits for seniors age 60 and older or people with disabilities, Tuesday through Thursday.
