Moving to Overland Park: who to call and what the city asks.

Overland Park does not pick up trash itself. Private companies handle trash and recycling, and residents and homeowners' associations arrange service with one of the city's permitted trash haulers. Bulky item pickup also comes from those haulers, not the city: each hauler must offer at least one bulky item pickup each year, and residents schedule it with their hauler. The city does not provide utility service itself either, so power, gas, water and sewer each come from a separate listed company.

Snow operations and street parking

During snow operations, the city asks residents not to park on the street until it has been plowed. Residential streets are plowed after snowfall stops and after higher-priority streets are cleared.

Trash containers and yard waste bags

Trash and recycling containers should be returned from the curb within 24 hours of pickup. Yard waste must be bundled in lawn bags, and plastic bags will not be picked up.

The Recycling Center at 11921 Hardy and the county's paint drop-off

The city runs a drop-off Recycling Center at 11921 Hardy for residential recycling. It does not accept recycling from businesses. The center closes at 4 p.m., with the last entry at 3:50 p.m.

The Johnson County Household Waste Collection and Reuse Facility takes paint and household chemicals on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., by appointment.

Evergy, Atmos Energy, Kansas Gas, WaterOne and the listed internet providers

The city's utilities page lists Evergy as the power provider permitted to serve Overland Park. For natural gas it lists Atmos Energy and Kansas Gas. Water comes from WaterOne and sewer from Johnson County Wastewater.

The same page lists AT&T, Everfast Fiber, Google Fiber, Spectrum, DIRECTV and Dish as the cable, internet, fiber and telephone providers permitted to serve the city.

Blue Valley registration and Shawnee Mission attendance areas

Blue Valley families new to the district use the New Student Registration link on the district's registration page. Blue Valley asks for proof of residency: a current purchase contract, lease or utility bill within the attendance area for the address.

Shawnee Mission students generally attend the school designated for the attendance area where they live.

RideKC, RideJoCo and Johnson County Library

RideKC provides bus transportation throughout metropolitan Kansas City and around Johnson County and Overland Park. RideJoCo is the new name for Johnson County Transit and remains part of the regional RideKC network.

Johnson County Library provides library services in Overland Park.

Pet licenses, voter registration and refund claims

All dogs and cats must be licensed by six months old, or within 30 days of being brought into the city. Residents are asked to apply for a new pet license within 30 days of moving to the city. A household can have up to four dogs and/or cats without a special animal permit.

Residents can register to vote at the City Clerk's Office at City Hall or the Johnson County Election Office, which is in Olathe.

Homestead, SAFESR and SVR property tax refund claims are filed with the Kansas Department of Revenue between January 1 and April 15 each year.

The city rental license

A city rental license is required for all rental homes, including short-term rentals. The fee is $120 per building, and licenses are valid for two years.
