Moving to Brownsville: who to call and what the city asks.
Brownsville is the county seat of Cameron County. The county owns and operates three international bridges between Brownsville and Matamoros: the Veterans, Gateway and Free Trade Bridges. The Brownsville Public Utilities Board (BPUB) provides electrical, water and wastewater services to its customers, according to the City of Brownsville. BPUB also handles billing for recycling on behalf of the city, but it does not run the recycling service, according to the city's recycling FAQ.
Starting BPUB service at a new address
A new resident starts BPUB service at a new address with an application. A service deposit may be required, depending on payment history. Applications for residential service are typically processed within 1-2 business days. BPUB asks for a valid state or government-issued ID, plus a lease or landlord letter for renters or a Deed of Trust for owners.
For water, BPUB provides drinking water to Brownsville through a citywide distribution system. For sewer, BPUB provides wastewater collection and treatment to the Brownsville community.
Republic Services trash carts and Redfish recycling
The City of Brownsville selected Republic Services for residential solid waste collection and Redfish for residential recycling. All homes within Brownsville city limits with a 96-gallon trash cart are eligible for a recycling cart.
Residents can find their recycling pickup day on the online route map or by scanning the QR code on the cart lid. Carts are set out by 7:00 a.m. on collection day or the night before.
Brush and bulk pickup at (956) 546-HELP
The city has a brush and bulk pickup service, with a special pickup outside a scheduled week arranged through (956) 546-HELP. Brush and bulky items go in separate piles. Refrigerators, freezers and A/C units are only picked up if the Freon has been removed by an authorized facility and the item carries that facility's decal.
The City of Brownsville MSW Landfill is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
BISD registration at 1900 E. Price Road
Brownsville Independent School District (BISD) takes registrations for new students year round and has an online registration form in English and Spanish. The Student Enrollment office is at 1900 E. Price Road, Suite 210, phone (956) 548-8271.
B-Metro fares and Smart Cards
B-Metro is the city's bus system. The general fare is $2.00. B-Metro Smart Cards are bought at the Administrative Window at La Plaza for $5.00 plus fare.
Library card rules and city pet license fees
A Brownsville library card requires a person 18 or older with a valid picture ID; under 18, a parent or guardian applies. Out-of-state ID holders bring proof of a Texas address. Replacement cards cost $1.00.
The Brownsville Animal Regulation and Care Center lists a city license for a spayed or neutered dog or cat (altered, with proof) at $5.00. The city license for an unaltered dog or cat is $10.00.
Cameron Appraisal District and the short-term rental ordinance
Questions about exemptions, property value or the tax billing address go to the Cameron Appraisal District.
Brownsville has a short-term rental ordinance requiring operators to register their properties and remit Hotel Occupancy Tax monthly.
