Local services and rules

Moving to Galesburg: who to call and what the city asks.

Galesburg is a city in Knox County, Illinois. Raking leaves or moving grass into the street can result in fines. Each residence gets one 96-gallon refuse cart, and loose bags are not accepted.

Snow parking prohibition at 2 inches

A parking prohibition on all city streets takes effect automatically when snow accumulation reaches 2 inches. Cars parked on city streets then can be ticketed and towed. The Central Business District is not included except for the northwest corner of the public square.

Waste Management trash, recycling and yard waste

Waste Management, Inc. holds the city contract for solid waste service. Refuse service begins at the same time a water account is opened. Refuse is collected weekly all year, recycling every other week, and yard waste weekly except in December, January and February, when it is collected once a month. Recycle bins and wheeled carts belong to WM and are left at the property when moving.

Yard waste goes out in a paper yard waste bag or a refuse can marked YW, and plastic bags are not allowed for it.

Oversized items and special collection

Oversized items are collected at the curb on Tuesdays and must be scheduled 48 hours ahead. Each residence is limited to one oversized item or appliance per month.

Household chemicals, paint products, batteries, flammable items, electronics and pool chemicals are collected through the At Your Door Special Collection service, which is part of the regular residential refuse program and needs no sign-up. Used tires, propane tanks, auto batteries, motor oil and large demolition waste are not collected at the curb.

Water, sewer and energy aggregation

Monthly utility bills cover refuse, sewer and water services, with sewer and water charges based on water usage.

Residents and small commercial businesses inside Galesburg may take part in a municipal energy aggregation program.

Schools, library card and buses

Galesburg CUSD #205 enrolls new students through an online guardian account and enrollment forms. Records are requested from the student's most recent school.

Galesburg Public Library, at 264 W. Main St., issues a card to residents inside the city limits who bring a valid photo ID showing a Galesburg address, or a photo ID with proof of a Galesburg address such as a bill or lease.

Public transportation in Galesburg consists of fixed route bus service and paratransit bus service.

Pet registration and rental inspections

Pet registration is required in Galesburg and is completed in person at the City Clerk's Office.

The Property Compliance Division runs a rental inspection program for all rental units in the city, along with enforcement of nuisance, housing and property maintenance codes.
