Moving to Kokomo: who to call and what the city asks.

The City of Kokomo runs the City-Line Trolley, which is free to ride. All trolley trips begin and end at the Transit Center at 215 E Sycamore St, and riders can transfer between lines there. Parking a vehicle in an alley is allowed only to load or unload. The city animal ordinance requires dogs, cats and ferrets three months of age and older to be vaccinated against rabies.

Truck and trailer parking

Under the city parking code, trucks, tractors and trailers over 7,000 pounds registered gross weight may not park on a residential-district street except in an emergency such as delivering construction equipment, or temporarily while being loaded or unloaded.

A truck wider than eight feet, higher than ten feet or longer than 28 feet, including its load, may not park on any street except when loading or unloading.

The Chief of Police or City Traffic Commission may approve parking that does not meet these rules, for specific purposes and a limited time.

A recreational vehicle or trailer may not be parked on any city street for more than 72 continuous hours. The area counted as the same spot includes 100 feet from the original spot.

Snow routes and noise hours

The Snow Removal Coordinator can declare a snow removal condition when expected snow will make conditions hazardous. The public is told through a press release to local radio, television and news services. While a snow removal condition is in effect, no vehicle may be parked on a snow route.

The city noise code exempts lawnmowers, construction and repair equipment and power tools, when properly muffled, between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. only. Operating a pile driver, pneumatic hammer, hoist or similar appliance with loud or unusual noise is prohibited between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.

Garbage collection by the Street Department

Garbage and refuse is picked up at least once every seven days from single-family residences and from apartment buildings of four units or less within the city limits. Collection schedules are set by the Street Department.

On routes served by automated collection, the city provides one container to each residence.

Garbage is collected at ground level within five feet of the designated alley, or at an accessible spot within five feet of the front curb of a public street, or as the Street Commissioner designates. Complaints about refuse service go to the Street Commissioner of the city.

What city pickup leaves behind

Regular city pickup does not take construction or demolition debris, more than one large item of furniture or large appliance per week, cement blocks, bricks or timbers, or tree limbs or brush except as the code allows.

Rubbish too large, heavy or plentiful for regular pickup can be picked up for an additional charge, if equipment and manpower are available.

City pickup does not take hazardous materials such as vehicle tires, propane tanks, cans of liquid paint, or appliances with Freon.

Kokomo School Corporation, at 1500 S. Washington St, enrolls students online, with separate paths for new students, returning students and out-of-district applications.

The Kokomo-Howard County Public Library serves residents of Center, Taylor, Howard, Clay, Ervin, Harrison, Honey Creek and Monroe townships in Howard County. Its site lists several card types and says to contact the Circulation Desk at any library location with questions.
