Local services and rules

Moving to Louisville: who to call and what the city asks.

Louisville and Jefferson County share the same borders under a city-county merger, and the consolidated government is called the Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government, commonly known as Louisville Metro. Residents of the Urban Services District, the old City of Louisville boundary, receive city-managed trash, recycling, yard waste and large item pickup. In unincorporated areas, residents must contract with a private hauler for garbage services; recycling and yard waste services are offered by the hauler but are optional.

Pod or Dumpster Permit and Loading Zone application

Louisville Metro Public Works issues permits including a Loading Zone application and a Pod or Dumpster Permit.

Residential Parking Zones in Old Louisville and Butchertown

A Residential Parking Permit Program is in place in the Old Louisville and Butchertown neighborhoods. Residents within a Residential Parking Zone who need on-street parking provide an application, proof of residency (a signed copy of the lease), the vehicle registration, a copy of the driver's license and a signed acknowledgement form.

Street sweeping in the Urban Services District

Street sweeping in the Urban Services District runs from March through November, weather permitting. On sweeping days residents should not park on designated streets from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m., and vehicles on streets scheduled for cleaning are subject to citation and/or towing.

RiverLink tolls on three Southern Indiana bridges

RiverLink tolling is in place on the Abraham Lincoln Bridge (I-65 North), the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge (I-65 South) and the Lewis and Clark Bridge between Louisville Metro and Southern Indiana. The Clark Memorial Bridge (US 31) and the Sherman Minton Bridge (I-64) between Louisville and Southern Indiana have no tolls.

Garbage carts, recycling, large items and the Haz Bin

The garbage cart goes out by 6 a.m. on collection day and comes back in by 4 p.m. the day after collection. In the Urban Services District, recycling is collected every other week.

Large Item Pickup by appointment is available in the Urban Services District, for up to four large items, once per week. Approved items are set out in the same location as garbage collection after 4 p.m. the day before the appointment and by 6 a.m. the day of the appointment.

Louisville/Jefferson County residents can drop off household hazardous materials at the Haz Bin, 7501 Grade Lane. It accepts hazardous waste from Louisville Metro residents only, not from businesses.

In apartment complexes and multi-family units, waste services are typically arranged by property managers, and recycling may not be available.

LG&E, JCPS, TARC, the library card and other local registrations

Residential service with LG&E is started through its online start-service request form, and it asks you to allow up to three business days for the request to be processed.

Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) serves the area; applications are required only for elementary students entering kindergarten, elementary students who have moved, Choice Zone students, and students of any grade who want a magnet school or program or an Academy of Louisville program. TARC delivers mobility services to the Greater Louisville community. The Louisville Regional Airport Authority owns, operates and develops Louisville's two major airports, Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) and Bowman Field (LOU).

The Louisville public library gives a card to anyone who lives, works, attends school, or owns property in Jefferson County, and to members of that person's household. In Louisville, all cats and dogs must be licensed and vaccinated against rabies. Residents can register to vote online or check their registration through the Jefferson County Clerk.

All properties in Louisville Metro that are occupied or offered for long-term occupancy in exchange for money or any other consideration must be registered with Louisville Metro Government.
