Local services and rules

Moving to Maplewood: who to call and what the city asks.

Maplewood is a township in Essex County, New Jersey. Gas-powered leaf blowers are prohibited year-round in the township. Recycling is dual-stream on alternating weeks, and materials put out on the wrong week will not be picked up.

Overnight Parking Permits and the 2 AM to 6 AM Rule

Maplewood does not allow parking on public roads between 2 AM and 6 AM without a permit. Residents without driveways can buy an overnight parking permit that lets them park in front of their home. Residential parking permits for homes near schools allow daytime parking only, not overnight parking.

For temporary overnight street parking of less than a week, such as for a visitor, contact the non-emergency police line at (973) 762-3400 to request approval.

Shoveling snow and ice into the street is against township ordinance.

Construction not done by or for the Township, County or State is limited to 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM on weekdays, 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Saturday and 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Sunday.

Monday-to-Wednesday Recycling, Private Trash Haulers and Autumn Leaf Pickup

Curbside recycling is picked up every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, depending on your section of town. The Township does not provide a toter (recycling container) of any kind.

Household trash that is not recycling is not handled by the Department of Public Works. Residents contact a third-party company such as Waste Management or Waste Industries.

In autumn the Department of Public Works schedules rounds of curbside leaf pickup.

The Bulk Drop Off at 359 Boyden Avenue

The Department of Public Works does not pick up bulk items. Residents bring them to the Bulk Drop Off program, which takes household bulk refuse including refrigerators, washing machines, dryers and furniture.

The program is held at the Recycling Center, 359 Boyden Avenue, for Maplewood residents. Proof of Maplewood residency is required before any materials are accepted.

The DPW recycling center at 359 Boyden Avenue is open 8:00 am to 3:00 pm on weekdays and 8:00 am to 12:00 pm on Saturdays, and closed Sundays.

Separate Sewer and Stormwater Bills and the Tax Collector

Sewer and stormwater utility bills are separate from the property tax bill and are paid directly by the property owner.

The Tax Collector's office bills and collects the municipal, county and school portions of property tax.

The Jitney, the South Orange and Maplewood Schools and the Library

The Township's jitney service transports Maplewood commuters to and from the Maplewood Train Station. It runs Monday through Friday except municipal holidays, on a fixed route.

The public schools of South Orange and Maplewood are open to children of residents legally domiciled in the Village of South Orange or the Township of Maplewood.

Anyone who lives, works, pays taxes or attends school in Maplewood is entitled to a library card, and applies in person at either library building with proof of residence, employment or school enrollment.

Pet Licenses and the Rent Control Ordinance

Licenses are required for dogs seven months and older and cats four months and older. Licenses are renewed each January.

Maplewood's rent control ordinance limits how much rent can be increased each year for certain residential properties. A qualifying rent-controlled apartment keeps its rent-controlled status when a tenant moves out.
