Moving to Mesa: who to call and what the city asks.

The City of Mesa is its own utility company. It provides electricity to over 18,000 residential and commercial customers in about 5.5 square miles centered around downtown Mesa, and natural gas to over 82,000 homes and businesses in 95 square miles of Mesa, plus the Magma service area in portions of Queen Creek, San Tan Valley and Pinal County. Mesa is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona.

Street sweeping and low tree branches

Mesa aims to sweep major arterial streets weekly and residential and collector streets every 4 weeks. Sweepers cannot sweep under trees that hang lower than 14 feet.

Starting service at 55 N. Center St.

New residential utility services in Mesa are requested by phone or in person at 55 N. Center St., Mesa, AZ 85201. Mesa charges an $11.00 utility administrative fee to establish an account.

Residential customers must place a deposit before service is turned on. The electric deposit is $265 for a dwelling unit with its own meter, and deposits may be waived if the applicant had comparable service with Mesa in the past 24 months. For a dwelling with its own meters, deposits are $100 for water and $50 for wastewater.

Utility service is normally connected the next business day after the request. Same-day connection carries a $55.00 convenience fee on top of the normal charges.

To turn on gas service, electricity must be active that day, an adult over 18 must be present, and all gas appliances must be connected beforehand. The gas deposit is $125 and the service connection charge is $40.00.

Barrels, bulk pickup and roll-off containers

Mesa provides curbside trash collection to all residents in a black 60-gallon or 90-gallon barrel, with standard service once a week. Single-family homes are eligible for black trash, blue recycling and green yard waste barrels. The blue recycling barrel is collected curbside weekly, including holidays, and barrels go in the gutter by 6 a.m. on collection day.

Mesa schedules curbside pickup of furniture, mattresses and other large household items for an additional charge, starting at $31.00 per load for Mesa trash and recycling customers, with a maximum of 4 loads per pickup. Bulky items go at the curb after 6 p.m. the night before and no later than 6 a.m. on the scheduled day. A $31.00 trip charge applies if items are not out.

Appliances are picked up at the curb for $19.00 each, plus an $11.00 Freon removal fee for appliances with refrigerant, and must be scheduled in advance.

Mesa also rents 20-, 30- and 40-cubic yard roll-off containers for residential and commercial projects, first come, first served. Residents of HOA or multi-family communities may need to contact property management.

The Household Hazardous Materials facility

Mesa's Household Hazardous Materials facility takes items that do not belong in the curbside barrels, at no additional cost to Mesa residents who pay the Mesa Green & Clean fee. It is open Wednesday to Saturday, 7:00 am to 2:00 pm, and requires proof of Mesa residency. Business-related waste is not accepted, and limits apply.

Mesa residents may also drop appliances there at no charge, limited to two appliances per day.
