Local services and rules

Moving to Scottsdale: who to call and what the city asks.

In some parts of Scottsdale, residential trash is collected from shared 300-gallon containers in alleys. On the last Thursday of every month the city hauls away major appliances such as washers, dryers, stoves, water heaters, dishwashers, refrigerators and freezers, for residents with City of Scottsdale solid waste accounts.

Brush and bulk piles

Scottsdale Solid Waste does monthly brush and bulk collection for residents who pay for residential collection services, and it takes furniture and mattresses. Bulk piles may be put out no sooner than 3 days before the Monday of the collection week.

Each pile should be no larger than 10 feet long by 6 feet wide by 4 feet tall. Bulk waste and green waste piles stay at least three feet apart.

Freon in refrigerators and the Salt River Landfill

Refrigerators and freezers with Freon are not collected unless a certified technician has removed the compressor and recovered the Freon.

Residents with residential solid waste service can haul up to 2,000 pounds of trash, brush or bulk items to the Salt River Landfill once per calendar week, Monday through Saturday.

Move-in boxes and trash container rules

Residents newly settled in a single-family home with a City of Scottsdale solid waste account can schedule a pickup of their move-in boxes. Boxes must be completely empty and flattened and placed at the front edge of the property.

Pickup schedules for trash, recycling and the annual brush and bulk dates are found through the city's My Services tool, where a resident types in the address. Containers go out on the street with the wheels against the curb by 5 a.m. on collection day and come back in the same day.

An additional black trash container costs a one-time $108.00 from Solid Waste Services plus an extra monthly fee of $16.45 per container. The number to call is 480-312-5600.

Household hazardous waste appointments

City of Scottsdale facilities are not drop-off sites for household hazardous waste, electronics or moving boxes. The city collects household hazardous waste at the home for residents who pay for residential waste collection, up to three free collections per address per year.

Pickup appointments open on the 1st of each month at 8 a.m. and close when full. The largest container allowed is 5 gallons, up to 20 gallons per appointment.

Swimming pool chemicals, household cleaners, paint and automotive fluids cannot go in trash or recycling containers or out for brush and bulk collection. Medium to large lithium batteries, such as those from e-bikes, electric scooters and ride-on toys, are not accepted in the city's household hazardous waste collection.

Start Service requests and deposits

Residents start city utility service through a Start Service request form, and the city needs a minimum of three business days for any service request.

Some customers pay no deposit, for example renters with at least 12 months of City of Scottsdale service in the last two years. Anyone else is billed a deposit, and the amount is available by phone at 480-312-2461.

A residential water bill has a monthly service charge set by the water meter size plus a monthly charge for the amount of water used.

The fare-free trolley

Scottsdale runs a fare-free trolley that connects to Valley Metro and Tempe Orbit service. The trolley is free and runs every 20 minutes, Monday to Friday from 5:45 a.m. to 7:45 p.m.

School registration, library cards and dog licenses

Scottsdale Unified School District families can register for their neighborhood school or apply for Open Enrollment at a school of choice.

To get a card from Scottsdale Public Library, a resident brings a photo ID and proof of current physical address, such as a utility bill, lease or mortgage statement.

Maricopa County Animal Care & Control requires all dogs 3 months or older to be licensed, with licenses renewed yearly.

City tax rates, voter registration and short-term rentals

The City of Scottsdale's transaction privilege (sales) tax rate is 1.70% and its use tax rate is 1.50%.

Scottsdale directs residents to Maricopa County to register to vote; the city clerk handles elections information.

Properties rented for less than 30 days need a Scottsdale license for each property.
