Local services and rules

Moving to Nashua: who to call and what the city asks.

Nashua is in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, and is one of the county's two county seats along with Manchester. Overnight parking is restricted on all public ways in Nashua between 12 midnight and 6 a.m. daily. Carts and bins belong to the City of Nashua and stay with the assigned address, so a household cannot take them when it moves. Trash from a clean-out or move-out must go to the Four Hills Landfill, and a residential landfill permit is required.

Overnight Parking and the Permit to Encumber

Overnight on-street parking between 12:00 midnight and 6:00 a.m. is allowed only on designated streets, and only for vehicles with a permit, according to the Overnight On-Street Annual Parking Permit page. A household with an emergency or occasional overnight guests can ask the Parking Department, at 603-589-3077 or online, for permission to park on the street overnight. There is no guarantee of approval.

A dumpster or storage container placed on a Nashua street needs a permit to encumber from the Engineering Department, requested 3 days ahead.

Snow Emergencies, Plowing and Sweeping

During the declared hours of a snow emergency, every vehicle must be off city streets or it can be towed. Residents may park free in the High Street and Elm Street garages and in the lot at 25 Crown Street behind Make it Labs. Nashua runs a Snow Emergency Information Line at 589-4795 and turns on snow emergency beacons before and during an emergency.

Pushing driveway snow back into the street in Nashua carries a fine of up to $1,000.

Street sweepers run city-wide from April 1st to December 1st, weather permitting.

Trash Carts and Curbside Recycling

The Solid Waste Department collects recycling every other week, on the same day as trash pickup. Under the automated trash collection rules, carts go out no earlier than 24 hours before collection day and by 6:45 am on the day.

Extra bags of trash from move-ins or move-outs are not picked up at the curb. They go to the Four Hills landfill under a landfill sticker.

Oversized Items and the Four Hills Landfill

Furniture, large appliances and tires without rims are picked up by appointment through the Oversize Item Pick-Up service. The number is 603-589-3410, and the Oversized Item form is the other way to ask. The first 5 oversized items picked up each year by the Solid Waste Department are free.

Residents can also take oversized items such as mattresses, furniture and refrigerators to the Four Hills Landfill at 840 West Hollis Street, with a residential permit. The permit for the landfill and recycling center is issued per calendar year per vehicle, and a current vehicle registration is shown as proof of residency.

The Nashua Recycling Center at the Four Hills Landfill is open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. It takes empty 20 pound propane tanks at no charge. Household hazardous waste events take up to 10 gallons or 20 pounds per vehicle, for a charge.

Liberty Gas, Sewer Bills and Cable

Liberty provides natural gas where a Nashua property has it. A new resident picks a time online to have the meter turned on. An adult 18 or older must be at the property for the appointment, because a Liberty technician has to enter to light and check the gas appliances and connections.

Sewer (wastewater) bills are paid to the City of Nashua, online through the city website portal or by mailed check, as the Tax and Wastewater Collections page describes. The Nashua Wastewater Department takes calls at (603)589-3560 for a sewer back-up, a broken or missing manhole cover or catch basin, or a pump station alarm.

Comcast is the only company that provides traditional cable service in Nashua, according to the city. Satellite TV from DISH Network and DirecTV is available to most Nashua residences.

Enrolling at the Welcome Center and Getting a Library Card

The Nashua School District registers new students at its Welcome Center, 17 Birch Hill Drive, open Monday through Friday 8AM to 4PM, phone (603) 966-1080. Registration needs proof of residency, which is two utility bills or a copy of the lease or mortgage agreement.

Anyone who lives, works, owns property, attends school or is retired from employment in Nashua can get a free Nashua Public Library card. The standard card is free and valid for three years, and is applied for in person at the Customer Service desk.

City Clerk, Assessing and Dog Licences

The Nashua City Clerk registers voters Monday through Friday 8:00AM to 5:00PM, or at the polling location on election day. Licensing a dog takes proof of a current rabies vaccination, and proof of spay or neuter gets the lower rate.

Owners of certain rental properties file the name and contact of an in-state agent with the Nashua City Clerk, under the landlord notice rule. Nashua charges no fee for the filing.

Taxpayers must tell the Assessing Department about any change of address or status. Property tax questions go to propertytaxes@nashuanh.gov or 589-3190.

CityBus, the Airport Bus and Neighborhoods

The Nashua Transit System CityBus runs scheduled public bus service throughout Nashua, Monday through Saturday. Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT) is the airport the city names for scheduled flights, about 15 minutes from Nashua, and bus service runs between the airport and Nashua.

The city describes Nashua as a mix of historic buildings, a downtown district, pedestrian-oriented urban neighborhoods and more rural and suburban neighborhoods.
