Local services and rules

Moving to Windham: who to call and what the city asks.

Windham, in Rockingham County, has no municipal water or sewer. All properties are on private septic systems, and all but some limited areas on community wells serviced by Pennichuck Waterworks are on private wells. The town also has no municipal trash pickup: residents take trash to the Transfer / Recycling Station or contract with a private company for pickup. Residents get a Town Beach pass at the beach by showing proof of residency.

Winter parking rules on Windham streets

No unattended vehicle may be left on any street between midnight and 6:00 am from December 1st through April 1st, except in an emergency. No vehicle may be left unattended on any street once new snowfall has reached four inches, except in an emergency. Police may move violating vehicles at the operator's expense.

Transfer Station permit, hours and recycling

Recycling is mandatory in Windham. The Transfer Station serves Windham residents with a window-sticker permit. To get one, see an attendant during business hours with proof of residency.

The Transfer Station is open Wednesday to Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Brush and yard waste at the Marblehead Road landfill site

The Highway Department runs the former landfill site on Marblehead Road for brush and yard waste. It is open seasonally on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month from April through October, 9:30am-1:30pm.

Community Power for electricity

The Town has a Community Power plan that lets it sign electric services agreements with competitive power suppliers to serve residents and small businesses.

Registering a vehicle and voting at the Town Clerk's Office

A new resident registering a vehicle at the Town Clerk's Office must bring documentation from the closing of the home, or if renting a signed lease, a notarized statement from the owner, or a utility bill from the last 30 days showing the Windham service address. A new resident visiting Town Hall to establish residency and register vehicles should arrive at least one hour before closing.

A new voter can register during regular business hours at the Town Clerk's Office or at a Supervisor of the Checklist meeting. Voting takes place at Windham High School, with polls open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

All dogs aged 4 months or older must be licensed with the Town Clerk each year by April 30th, with a current rabies certificate.

School registration and the Nesmith Library card

The Windham School District registers students in Grades K-12 through an online packet. Registering a student requires two proofs of residency for the Town of Windham, one from each category (for example a signed rental agreement and an electric or other utility bill); PO Boxes are not accepted.

Anyone who lives in or owns property in Windham, including business property, can get a Nesmith Library card by visiting the library at 8 Fellows Rd with ID or proof of address.
