Local services and rules
Moving to Merrimac: who to call and what the city asks.
Merrimac is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts, on the southeastern border of New Hampshire. Trash pickup must be in blue trash bags, which can be bought at local retailers. Apartment buildings of more than 6 units, private developments and trailer parks are not eligible for municipal trash pickup. Building, electrical, plumbing and gas, mechanical and sprinkler permits are applied for online only; paper applications are not accepted.
Friday trash and every-other-Friday recycling
Trash pickup is weekly on Fridays. It goes to the curb by 6:30 a.m. on collection day and not before 6 p.m. the evening before.
Recycling is single-stream, collected every other week on Fridays, and must fit in the 96-gallon cart the town provides. Problems with pickup go to Casella Waste Systems at 1 (800) 445-1318.
Bulk item stickers and white goods
Bulk items are picked up on trash day and each needs a sticker, bought online or at town hall. Items 6 feet or more in length or height cannot be placed curbside. Construction, building material and glass items are not picked up curbside.
Appliances (white goods) are picked up curbside only on the 1st Friday of the month. Refrigerators and freezers set out as white goods must have the door removed.
G. Mello in Georgetown and the town yard waste site
G. Mello in Georgetown, MA, takes bulky items the town will not pick up.
The town yard waste site is open Fridays 10 AM to 2 PM and Saturdays 8 AM to 12 PM, April through November, and a municipal permit is required.
Merrimac Municipal Light Department
Electricity comes from the Merrimac Municipal Light Department, a customer-owned utility. New customers start service with a Start Service form.
Pentucket Regional School District and the Merrimac Public Library
Pentucket Regional School District serves Groveland, Merrimac and West Newbury, with a registrar for each school.
Any Merrimac resident can get a Merrimac Public Library card. A physical card is issued in person at the library; bring proof of identity and current address.
Animal permits, the leash law and voting
The town has a leash law, and dog waste must be picked up and disposed of. Annual Keeping of Animals Permits expire on March 31 each year.
The Town Clerk prepares the voting lists and supervises all elections. The polling location for the annual town election is the Public Library on W Main Street.
