Local services and rules

Moving to Ocala: who to call and what the city asks.

Starting July 6, 2026, the City of Ocala switched from curbside recycling collection to a citywide recycling drop-off program. The city's electric service also has a Prepaid Program for residential customers with no credit checks, no monthly bills, no deposits, and no fees for disconnection or late payments.

Downtown Ocala meters and the Patron Portal

Downtown Ocala parking meters operate Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The rate is $1.25 per hour south of State Road 40 and $0.75 per hour north of it. Parking permits are bought through the City of Ocala Patron Portal.

In downtown parking lots and garages, overnight parking is not permitted without an authorized permit. Trailers are prohibited in all parking structures and parking lots.

City of Ocala electric, water and sewer accounts

The City of Ocala provides electric service, along with water, sewer, storm water, solid waste, fiber and yard lights, to customers within the Ocala city limits. The Customer Service Office helps establish or cancel service.

A new residential customer can start traditional (monthly) billing through the online Traditional Billing Start form, or submit the Traditional Billing Start Packet by email, fax, mail or in person. In-person applications go to 201 SE 3rd St, Ocala FL 34471. A resident moving within Ocala can transfer traditional billing utility services from the old address to the new one through the online portal.

Collection days and the two-cart limit

City residential sanitation collection runs mostly Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Garbage, yard waste and bulk collections are each provided one day a week.

On July 6, 2026, recycling carts were converted to garbage carts. Each household may keep up to two carts, and any additional carts will be removed.

The Marion County recycling center permit

Marion County operates 18 recycling centers that take most household waste. Baseline Recycling Center is at 5601 SE 66th St., Ocala, FL 34480, and also accepts electronics.

Residents of incorporated cities such as Ocala can use the county centers by buying an annual permit. It can be registered to up to 3 vehicles per household for $100 a year, and permits are processed at 5601 SE 66th St., Ocala.

For furniture, the county recycling centers at Canal, Dunnellon, Davis, Martel, Newton and Scrambletown accept it during operating hours. The Baseline Landfill also takes furniture for a fee.

The centers take latex paint, used motor oil and oil filters up to five gallons per day, sharps in approved containers and fire extinguishers. Chemicals, gasoline and pesticides go to the Household Hazardous Waste area at the Baseline facility. The county limits household garbage at its recycling centers to two 90-gallon containers per day, and glass is no longer accepted there.

SunTran routes and fares

SunTran is Ocala's public transit system. The City of Ocala is its administrative agency and has contracted with RATP Dev for day-to-day operations.

Routes operate 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM on weekdays and Saturdays. The regular full cash fare is $1.50, and a monthly pass is $45 per month, with discounts for youth, students, older adults, individuals with disabilities and veterans.

Marion County offices for schools, voting and flood maps

Marion County Public Schools serves the area. A new student starts enrollment with the New Student Online Enrollment Form in Skyward Family Access; the Student Assignment and Records department can be reached at (352) 671-7743.

The Marion County Election Center is the county office to contact about voter registration and elections. Its mailing address is P.O. Box 289, Ocala, FL 34478-0289.

Marion County Growth Services can say whether a property is in a flood zone, provide flood insurance rate maps and explain building regulations in flood-prone areas.

Homestead exemption, tax dates and pet tags

Homestead exemption applications go to the Marion County Property Appraiser, and the office can be reached at 352-368-8300.

Marion County property taxes and assessments are due November 1 and become delinquent April 1. Early-payment discounts run 4% in November, 3% in December, 2% in January and 1% in February. Marion County no longer requires a county occupational license; the Board of County Commissioners repealed the ordinance effective October 1, 2006.
