Local services and rules

Moving to Stratford: who to call and what the city asks.

Bulk items in Stratford are collected by appointment only, and each household is allowed one bulk pickup appointment per year. The garbage and recycling carts are Town property, assigned to each household by a serial number that matches the specific address. Stratford is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut.

Bulk pickup and the Transfer Station on Watson Boulevard

Residents call Public Works at 203-385-4080, Monday through Friday 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, before putting items at the curb. Bulk items must be at the curb by 7:00 am on the appointment date, and not earlier than 3 days before it. Nothing in a bag, barrel or box is picked up as bulk.

As an alternative to bulk pickup, residents may bring items to the Town Transfer Station on Watson Boulevard, 7:00 am to 3:00 pm Monday through Friday and 8:00 am to 12:00 pm on Saturdays. The Transfer Station is closed on all holidays except the day after Thanksgiving.

The 96-gallon garbage and recycling carts

Households with Town garbage pickup received a 96-gallon dark green garbage cart and a 96-gallon blue recycling cart. A household that wants a smaller 64-gallon cart can request one from Public Works at 203-385-4080. If a Town cart is damaged or stolen, Public Works replaces it.

Garbage or recycling placed outside the carts is not picked up. Hazardous waste, flammable items, fluorescent bulbs and tubes, bulky items, paint and liquids may not go in the garbage cart.

On the holidays the Sanitation Department does not work, collection that week is delayed, with Friday's route collected on Saturday.

Water Pollution Control and sewer billing

Residential sewer billing questions are handled by the Town's Tax Collector at 203-385-4030; commercial and industrial billing questions go to the Water Pollution Control office at 203-385-4065. The Tax Collector's Office bills and collects property and motor vehicle taxes, and residential and commercial sewer use charges.

A resident or building owner with a sewer backup can call the Water Pollution Control Division at 203-385-4065 at any time, 24 hours a day including weekends and holidays. Septic waste from Stratford residents, including recreational vehicle waste, is accepted at the Water Pollution Control facility Monday through Saturday, 8:00AM to 4:00PM.

Beach stickers from the Recreation Department

Resident beach stickers are mailed with the Motor Vehicle Tax Bill every other year, on odd years. Residents who did not receive a beach sticker, or are new to town, contact the Recreation Department at (203) 385-4052.

Residents with new or leased vehicles show a car registration or tax bill and a driver's license at the Recreation Office at Birdseye Complex to get beach stickers.

Train, bus and airport

The Stratford Train Station is a regular stop for Metro North trains running from New Haven to New York City. Its parking lot is operated by the Town under lease from the Connecticut Department of Transportation, and is primarily for rail commuters with no preference for Stratford residents.

Greater Bridgeport Transit (GBT) is the public bus system serving Stratford, Bridgeport and surrounding towns. Tweed New Haven Airport, about a 15 minute drive from Stratford, offers flights to cities across the country.

Schools, library card, dog licenses, voter registration and rental complaints

Stratford Public Schools enrols new students through an online registration with two parts to complete, and both must be finished before a child can begin school.

Anyone who lives in Stratford may get a card at the Stratford Library. To apply, bring identification showing your Stratford, CT address, such as a driver's license, lease or utility bill, to the Check-Out Desk.

The Town Clerk's office handles dog licensing, and the town offers online dog license renewal. The Registrars of Voters office registers eligible voters in Stratford.

The Town has a Fair Rent Commission complaint form for rental housing practices; inquiries go to the Health Department at 203-385-4090. The Office of Community Development serves as the Town's Fair Housing Office and informs tenants, landlords and homebuyers of their rights and responsibilities.
