Local services and rules

Moving to Sturgis: who to call and what the city asks.

Sturgis is a city in St. Joseph County, Michigan. Electric, water and sewer service within the city limits are owned and operated by the municipality, and the Electric Department also serves customers in the surrounding area. Commercial airports near Sturgis are in Kalamazoo about 45 miles north, South Bend about 45 miles west and Fort Wayne about 50 miles south. Kirsch Municipal Airport in the city handles corporate jets and smaller aircraft.

Snow emergency parking rules

During a Snow Removal Emergency, no on-street parking is allowed on any City street, and vehicles parked on-street may be ticketed. A Snow Removal Emergency takes effect automatically when snow accumulations are greater than four inches, or when the City declares one based on weather forecasts.

The parking prohibition stays in effect until a street has been cleared of snow between two successive street intersections, unless cancelled by public announcement. DPS is responsible for snow removal from city streets, City-owned parking lots, downtown sidewalks and Kirsch Municipal Airport.

Permits for street work, building and rentals

Construction in the street right-of-way, including drive approaches, utilities and sidewalks, requires a permit from the City Engineer's Office. Building permits and plan reviews go through the Community Development Department, while electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits come from the State of Michigan Bureau of Construction Codes.

Non-owner-occupied dwellings, including single-family homes, multiple-family units and hotels, must be registered and inspected by a City Inspector. Registration of rental properties is the owner's responsibility and must be completed annually.

Utility sign-up at City Hall

Utility Customer Service at Sturgis City Hall, 130 N Nottawa, helps new customers set up utility services and answers billing questions. Setting up water service at an existing residence goes through utility customer service at 269-659-7254 or a visit to Sturgis City Hall.

The Clerk/Treasurer's Office at City Hall is where a resident can register to vote, sign up for utility service and acquire a Compost Site Pass.

Curbside recycling by week

Curbside recycling is collected every other week on Thursday, with homes north of U.S.-12 on one week and homes south of U.S.-12 on the next. It is offered to single-family and small multi-family residential units, using single stream collection, and items do not need sorting.

A household that needs a recycling cart submits a Recycling Request or calls 269-659-7223.

Brush, leaf and compost drop-off

Brush pickup runs in April and October, plus additional pickup after substantial storm events as needed. It is limited to 1 truck load of material per parcel.

Loose leaf pickup normally starts in the third week of October and continues through the end of November as weather permits. Leaf pickup is for residents inside the city only; addresses with 5 digits are in a township and handle their own leaf disposal.

The City compost site on Fawn River Road accepts only leaves, grass clippings and brush, and materials must be removed from bags.
