Moving to Tallahassee: who to call and what the city asks.
Tallahassee is in Leon County; it is the county seat and the only incorporated municipality in the county. The City of Tallahassee is the exclusive provider of waste collection inside the city limits, with recycling and construction debris excepted, and it provides garbage, bulky item, yard waste and recycling service.
Construction noise hours and City parking
City rules allow permitted construction from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday. Outside those hours a construction "noise disturbance" is not allowed.
The City owns and manages public parking garages and parking meters. Some days and times are restricted.
City of Tallahassee Utilities electric service and deposits
City of Tallahassee Utilities supplies electric service in Tallahassee.
New residential customers pay a deposit for each utility service, billed in three installments. An electric-only account carries a $160.00 deposit and an $18.50 service charge.
A letter from a previous or current utility company showing at least one year of service with a good paying record may eliminate the deposit. Residential deposits are returned as a credit after three years of good payment or when the account is closed.
Natural gas and online service requests
The City of Tallahassee supplies natural gas to some neighborhoods. A new customer first checks the City's natural gas availability map to confirm access.
A new resident starts City utility service online. Residential customers cannot start service over the phone, and stop or transfer requests are made by logging into the account.
Weekly garbage and recycling collection
Garbage and recycling are collected once a week. Containers may go to the curb no earlier than the day before pick up and must be back near the home by the day after.
A new utility account can take up to five days to appear in the City's pick-up schedule lookup, which shows the schedule by address. The Utilities number is 850-891-4968.
Red and Blue week bulk and yard waste pickup
The City picks up bulky items and yard waste every other week, on a Red or Blue week with a set pick-up day.
Bulky items and yard waste go to the curb no sooner than the weekend before the pick-up date. Bulky items that cannot be left at the curb can go to the City's Cash for Trash events.
Inside the city limits, Waste Management rents open top containers on a per-request basis to City of Tallahassee Utilities customers.
Leon County hazardous waste drop-off and library cards
Leon County runs a Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Site. Commercial and non-profit entities may not use it.
Leon County Public Library cards are available in person at a library location or online. Adults 16 and older who are Leon County residents, property owners, students or teachers can apply.
Homestead exemptions and voter registration in Leon County
The county's Property Appraiser handles homestead exemptions. The filing deadline is March 1 for each tax year, and ownership and residency status on January 1 sets the first year of eligibility.
A voter's address on file sets the polling place and ballot. Updating it after a move within Leon County and after a move from another Florida county each have their own steps.
