Local services and rules

Moving to Tyler: who to call and what the city asks.

In Tyler, Tyler Water Utilities collects revenue for the Solid Waste Department's services through the monthly water bill. The same utility bill is what a City of Tyler resident needs to use Greenwood Farms Landfill, which the city owns and Republic Services operates. And glass is not accepted in the curbside recycling program.

Temporary Street and Lane Closure Permit

Work or an event that may require a temporary street or lane closure needs a Temporary Street and Lane Closure Permit. The documentation and the appropriate fee are submitted to the Tyler Police Department.

Two free bulky pick-ups each calendar year

Each residential household with curbside collection can request two bulky waste pick-ups each calendar year at no charge. Pick-ups occur within five business days after a request. A bulky item pick-up is limited to 6 to 8 cubic yards, and there is an extra charge for larger piles.

Special collections of bulky items, tires and bulk brush start at $20 and vary with the size and quantity of the items. Furniture, clothing and appliances put out at the curb line require notification to the Solid Waste Office under City Ordinance Sec. 16-4.

Curbside recycling at $5.96 a month

Curbside recycling is optional. Residential customers who enroll receive a recycling cart and bi-weekly pickups for $5.96 plus tax per month, and sign up by calling (903) 531-1388.

The Downtown Recycle Center on N. Bois D'Arc Ave.

The Downtown Recycle Center at 418 N. Bois D'Arc Ave. is a free, self-service drop-off center open six days a week. It is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon, and closed Sunday.

Automotive, lawnmower and tractor batteries, motor oil and anti-freeze are dropped off at the Downtown Recycle Center. Household hazardous waste in quantities of 32 ounces or less may be disposed of as household garbage.

The Request New Water Service form

A resident who has never had service with Tyler Water Utilities, or who needs to transfer service into their name, completes the Request New Water Service form. For service on the next available day, the water utility office is at 511 W. Locust St. Its business hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Applications for water service received Monday through Friday can take up to 7 business days to be processed.

Tyler Transit MicroTransit and Pounds Regional Airport

Tyler Transit runs MicroTransit, an on-demand service scheduled through the Tyler Transit app or by phone at (903) 533-8057. The fare is $1 per vehicle.

Tyler Pounds Regional Airport has American Airlines non-stop jet service to Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), with connecting flights to other destinations.

Tyler ISD online student registration

Tyler ISD handles all student registration (PK-12) online, from a PC, tablet or smartphone browser.

A Tyler Public Library card

Tyler Public Library is at 201 S. College Ave. A new resident brings photo identification and proof of a current street address, such as a driver's license, state ID, military ID, a recent utility bill or a lease agreement. Library cards are issued for three years for Tyler residents.
