Local services and rules

Moving to Urbandale: who to call and what the city asks.

Urbandale lies in two counties, Polk and Dallas. Residents are served by several local school districts rather than one, and the city's School District Map or the Polk or Dallas County Assessor website shows the district for an address. Sewer service falls under two districts, the Urbandale Sanitary Sewer District and the Urbandale/Windsor Heights Sanitary Sewer District, and a Sanitary Sewer Map shows which one applies.

Emergency parking ban and street sweeping signs

When plowing is underway, an emergency parking ban applies to all city streets, and vehicles must be off the street until the snow is cleared curb to curb. Sidewalks, including crosswalks, must be cleared within 24 hours after the end of a snowfall. Residents are asked not to shovel or blow snow from driveways or sidewalks into or across the street.

The city sweeps all streets and roadways at least 3 times per year. Vehicles are kept off the street where signs announce street sweeping.

MidAmerican Energy and the Urbandale Water Utility

MidAmerican Energy Company provides electric and gas service, and its call center helps start, transfer and discontinue service.

The Urbandale Water Utility provides water service and buys treated water from the Des Moines Water Works. Starting, canceling or transferring water service is done by contacting the utility office in advance at 515-278-3940, and an Application for Water Service Card is filled out. The utility also serves as a billing agent for the city, and the water statement includes charges for sanitary sewer, storm water and solid waste services.

Weekly garbage, Curb It! recycling and Compost It! yard debris

Household garbage is collected weekly by the city, and trash and recycling are normally collected Monday through Thursday. Recycling is collected every other week by Waste Management through the MWA Curb It! program. Yard debris is collected weekly during yard waste season by the city through the MWA Compost It! program. Containers go at the curb by 6:30 AM on the morning of the collection day.

A household without a city-supplied garbage container can email or call 515-278-3950 to get one.

Bulk pickup on the 2nd and 4th Fridays

Bulk item collections are scheduled on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month, and are booked by email or by calling 515-278-3950 at least one day ahead.

Large items that do not fit in the garbage bin, such as appliances and furniture, can be dropped off on the second Saturday of every month from 8 AM until Noon. Residents can drop off large items for no charge at the Urbandale Parks & Public Works Maintenance Facility at 9401 Hickman Road.

Hazardous waste drop-off in Grimes and Bondurant

Household hazardous waste drop-off events run from 8 a.m. to Noon on the second Saturday of the month from March to November at the Metro Northwest Transfer Station, 4105 Beisser Drive in Grimes. The MWA Regional Collection Center for Hazardous Waste, at 1105 Prairie Drive SW in Bondurant, accepts most household hazardous waste at no charge.

DART's local route and the rental Housing Certificate

DART, the regional transit authority, runs a local route connecting downtown Des Moines with Urbandale, Clive, Windsor Heights and West Des Moines.

Rental property owners and managers register through an online portal, apply for a Housing Certificate and have the property inspected by city staff. Single-family and duplex certificates are valid for two years.
