Local services and rules

Moving to Ames: who to call and what the city asks.

The City of Ames electric utility serves most Ames locations, while some locations are served by Alliant Energy or Midland Power. The Arnold O. Chantland Resource Recovery Plant opened in 1975 as the first municipally owned and operated waste-to-energy facility in the nation. The Rental Code adopted by the City requires all rental properties to register and obtain a Letter of Compliance through a routine inspection process.

Temporary Obstruction Permits and parking

The City of Ames requires a Temporary Obstruction Permit when part of a public right-of-way such as a sidewalk, street or parking will be blocked temporarily, for example for construction projects, renovation or sidewalk sales.

Parking rules make it unlawful to park a vehicle in the same place for more than 48 hours on any city street or municipal parking lot. Parking meters in Ames are enforced from 8:00 a.m. or 9:00 a.m., depending on location, to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday, except on city holidays.

Noise limits and snow routes

In residential areas the maximum noise level is 60 decibels from 7 a.m. to midnight and 55 decibels from midnight to 7 a.m.

Parking on snow routes is prohibited from the time the snow ordinance goes into effect until the snow has been plowed from curb to curb and it has stopped snowing. The City of Ames offers a Snow Plow Location Tracker map that shows an area in relation to snow routes and when plows have gone through.

Alliant Energy gas, city water and internet providers

Alliant Energy provides natural gas service to most locations in Ames. The City of Ames provides water and sewer service to almost every address in city limits. Independent companies provide internet service in Ames, and there are several to choose from.

The City of Ames utility request form on its website lets a resident start or stop services, sign up for e-notifications and sign up for auto pay.

Licensed haulers for garbage and the recycling cart

The City of Ames does not pick up garbage. Residents choose from licensed area haulers.

All single-family and multi-family properties with four or fewer units automatically receive a recycling cart and curbside recycling service. Yard waste is not accepted at the Resource Recovery Plant and must go to a yard waste disposal business.

Ames Community School District enrollment

In the Ames Community School District, elementary students attend their neighborhood elementary school, grades 6-8 attend Ames Middle School and grades 9-12 attend Ames High School. The Enrollment Specialist can say which school an address is zoned for.

The district enrollment and registration page has instructions for preschool, kindergarten, grades 1-12 new to the district, open enrollment and returning students.

CyRide and the Ames Public Library card

CyRide is the city bus system for Ames. It also runs a Dial-A-Ride service for persons with a disability and a late night service called Moonlight Express.

All Iowa residents may sign up for an Ames Public Library card. Applicants need photo identification and proof of a current Iowa address, plus a registration form or online registration.

Ames City Assessor, tax statements and voter registration

A property inside Ames is assessed by the Ames City Assessor. The Treasurer prepares and mails property tax statements to owners of land, buildings, mobile homes and other listed property.

Ames is in Story County, and the Story County Auditor is the Commissioner of Elections for Ames. The Auditor, at 900 Sixth St., Nevada, Iowa, handles voter registration information at 515-382-7210.
