Local services and rules

Moving to Alpharetta: who to call and what the city asks.

In Alpharetta, a tenant can only open a water and sewer account if the owner or management company of the property already has one, according to Fulton County Water Services. Garbage service is not optional either: through a contract with Republic Services, Inc., the City of Alpharetta provides household garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulky waste collection to all residential customers. Service is mandatory and billed quarterly in advance.

Carts and yard waste at the curb by 7 am

Under the city's trash and recycling rules, carts must be at the curb by 7 am on the scheduled collection day. Yard waste is collected weekly and goes to the curb by 7 am on the service day.

Bulk pickup: 72 hours' notice, 2 items a week

Bulk waste pickup is included in the residential service and must be requested 72 hours in advance. Republic Services collects up to 2 bulk items per week weighing less than 100 pounds in total. Large items that contain freon must have the freon removed before they will be accepted.

The glass drop-off at 1790 Hembree Road

Alpharetta residents can drop off glass, and only glass, at the Public Works Department at 1790 Hembree Road, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Other recyclables and trash are not accepted at that site.

Latex paint and the two hazardous waste collections

The city holds two community collections a year for household hazardous waste and paints. Participation is limited to residents within city limits and registration is required; the number for Public Works is 678-297-6200.

Usable latex paint can be recycled year-round at the Public Works Department at 1790 Hembree Road. It is free but registration is required.

Fulton County Schools and Online Registration

The city's Education page names the Fulton County Public School System as the district for Alpharetta, and lists Alpharetta High School at 3595 Webb Bridge Road among the high schools. Fulton County Schools enrolls new students through Online Registration, which is then completed at the student's zoned school.

Property taxes: the city bills, the county sets the value

The City of Alpharetta bills and collects City property taxes, while the Fulton County Board of Assessors sets the fair market value of the property. The City's proposed total millage rate for 2026 is 5.750 mills, unchanged from last year.

Short-term rental license and the neighborhood cap

Alpharetta requires an annual license for short-term rental operators. Short-term rentals are capped at no more than 5% of homes within a neighborhood, if permitted in the HOA declarations and covenants.

HOA Registration on the Neighborhoods page

The City of Alpharetta works with homeowners associations and has an HOA Registration form on its Neighborhoods page.
