Local services and rules
Moving to Marietta: who to call and what the city asks.
City ordinance requires all Marietta residents to sign up for sanitation service with the City of Marietta, and no private haulers are allowed to pick up sanitation within the city limits. Marietta is the county seat in the center of Cobb County, Georgia, about 15 miles northwest of Atlanta, with access from Interstate 75 and U.S. Highway 41. Cobb County International Airport - McCollum Field (RYY), owned by the Cobb County Department of Transportation, does not service commercial airlines; it is a general aviation airport.
Road closures, parking tickets and noise limits
The city handles road closure requests through an online permit system and asks for 24 hours for review. Partial road closures are allowed only between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Parking violations are issued to the registered owner of the vehicle, and payment is due within 10 days. Five or more unpaid violations bring added penalties and towing or immobilization.
The city noise ordinance sets sound level limits of 65 dBA from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and 60 dBA from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. at residential receiving property. Complaints go to Code Enforcement at 770-794-5439 on weekdays 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., or to Marietta Police at 770-499-3911 after hours.
Northwest Corridor Express Lanes and CobbLinc
The Northwest Corridor Express Lanes are 30 miles of reversible toll lanes on I-75 from Akers Mill Road to Hickory Grove Road and on I-575 from I-75 to Sixes Road. Travelers need a Peach Pass or interoperable toll transponder, and GDOT sets the direction of the lanes.
CobbLinc, run by Cobb County, has a Marietta transfer center, local routes, a free Circulator route and a microtransit zone. Routes 15 and 40 stop at Marietta Square.
Marietta Power and Water accounts and deposits
Marietta Power and Water, the city-created utility, serves both electric customers and water and sewer customers in Marietta and Cobb County. The city describes it as the largest municipal electric utility in Georgia, and it is community-owned.
It takes applications for electric and water service at 675 N Marietta Parkway or by phone at 770-794-5150. New accounts or service transfers pay a $25 service charge on the first utility bill.
Residential security deposits are $275 for power and water, $200 for power only and $75 for water only. The deposit can be avoided with electric service from Marietta Power within the past year and a good credit rating for at least 12 months.
City trash, recycling and large-item pickup
New sanitation service is arranged at 770-794-5150, and a recycling bin can be requested by calling 770-794-5595. The city provides residential garbage collection once a week, curbside recycling collection weekly and curbside yard waste (brush) collection weekly.
The city does not collect building material, tires, motor oil, batteries, liquid or hazardous wastes; paint is collected only if completely dried out.
For large trash items that do not fit in a garbage can, call the Sanitation Division at 770-794-5595 to arrange collection; fees vary with weight and volume. Large items should not be put by the street unless the Sanitation Division has been notified, and the household is billed for the pickup.
Cobb County Transfer Station rates
Cobb County residents pay a minimum of $14.00 for the first 400 pounds of household solid waste and construction and demolition debris at the Transfer Station, then $0.03 per pound over 400 pounds. Mattresses are $16.00 each and paint is $8.00 per can.
Only a valid Georgia driver's license is accepted as proof of residence at the Transfer Station.
Aspen registration, library cards and the Cobb newcomer page
Marietta City Schools registers new students through an online system called Aspen Student Registration; a family new to the district first requests an Aspen account.
A library card is free for Cobb County residents, property or business owners in Cobb County, county educators and county government employees. Sign up in person at any library location or register for an eCard online. Proof of residency is required to apply.
Cobb County has a Newcomer Information page covering auto tags and titles, driver's licenses, school districts, utilities, public safety, recreation and recycling.
City homestead exemption and property tax dates
Owners who live in their home within Marietta city limits qualify for a $4,000 city homestead exemption, and a copy of a valid Georgia-issued driver's license or ID showing the property address is required.
Cobb County property taxes are due October 15 each year, and bills are mailed August 15.
Cobb Board of Elections and floodplain permits
The Cobb Board of Elections Main Office is at 995 Roswell St. NE, 770-528-2300, and voters must be registered 30 days before an election.
Marietta participates in the National Flood Insurance Program, which has a 30-day waiting period before coverage takes effect. New development in a floodplain needs a city permit (City Permit Office, 770-794-5659).
