Local services and rules

Moving to Amsterdam: who to call and what the city asks.

Amsterdam is the only city in Montgomery County, and it sits about 32 miles west of Albany in the Mohawk Valley. Building, plumbing and electrical permits are issued only between 8AM-10AM and 1PM-2PM, Monday through Friday.

Garbage and recycling days in the city

Normal garbage collection is provided to all residents within the city as part of taxes. Garbage is collected Monday through Friday and recyclables on Wednesdays only. Collection days depend on where in the city a household lives; the Department of Public Works at 518-842-3691 gives the day for an address.

Garbage is not collected on Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year. Large items are picked up as a separate service, paid to the city Treasurer. Other garbage and large items can be taken to the Montgomery County Transfer Station on Route 5S, which charges a transfer fee on all drop-offs.

Reservoir water and the weekly garbage pickup

Water comes from impounding reservoirs at the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains in Saratoga County. Rubber gloves, paper towels, baby wipes, feminine products and cooking oils go in the weekly garbage pickup, not down the toilet.

Thruway Exit 27, the Amtrak station and Albany International Airport

NYS Thruway Exit 27 is on the south side of the city, with access to Routes 5, 5S and 67 through the city. Amtrak provides passenger rail service, with a train station on the west end of the city. Albany International Airport is approximately 30 miles from the city.

Greater Amsterdam School District registration

The Greater Amsterdam School District serves students in grades Pre-K through 12. New student registration in the district requires 2 proofs of residence, such as a utility statement, cable statement or notarized lease, dated within 30 days of registration.

Registration forms and proofs may be emailed to the district or left in the Registration Drop Box outside the District Office, which is behind Amsterdam High School on Saratoga Ave.

Dog licenses, leashes and barking

Dog licenses are obtained at the City Clerk's Office. Dogs must be on a leash at all times, and the leash should be no longer than 8 feet. Loud howling, barking or crying for more than 15 minutes that disturbs a person other than the owners is not permitted.

Treasurer, Assessor, voter forms and the library

Tax questions go to the Treasurer's Office at 518-841-4320 or 518-841-4337. The Assessor's Office is in City Hall and administers property tax exemptions. Voter registration forms are available at the City Clerk's office in City Hall or from the Montgomery County Board of Elections.

A library card is required to borrow books from the Amsterdam library and is obtained with a photo ID.
