Local services and rules

Moving to Cambridge: who to call and what the city asks.

Cambridge sits in southeast Middlesex County, across the Charles River from the City of Boston. Contractors with Massachusetts commercial plates may park in Permit Parking Only areas for up to three consecutive days without a permit. In a snow emergency, parking in designated facilities is available only to Cambridge residents with Resident Parking Permits.

Moving Van, Container/Crate and Dumpster Permits from the Department of Transportation

Curb space for a truck is reserved through a Street Occupancy Permit. Street Occupancy Permits can be applied for online.

  • A Moving Van Permit reserves curb space for a moving vehicle on a City street and can be issued for a maximum of two consecutive days.
  • A Moving Container/Crate Permit reserves curb space for placing a container or crate on a City street while moving goods in or out of a building. It is issued for three consecutive days.
  • A Dumpster Permit reserves curb space for a dumpster on a City street and is issued for a maximum of two spaces.

Resident, temporary and visitor parking permits

Residents must renew their parking permits each year. New residents who need to transfer their vehicle registration can apply for one-week or two-week temporary parking permits.

Visitor Parking Permits are paper permits placed on the dashboard. Residents do not need to own a vehicle to apply for one.

Street sweeping and the Snow Emergency Parking Ban

Residential street sweeping covers both sides of every residential street once per month from April through December.

During substantial storms the City may declare a Snow Emergency Parking Ban. Vehicles on streets signed for it are ticketed and towed while the ban is in effect.

Curbside carts, mattress slots and the Recycling Center

The City collects trash, recycling, food waste and yard waste from most residential buildings. Residents can order replacement carts and report missed pickups. The timing rules for the curb are these:

  • Curbside carts may be put out after 6PM the night before collection or by 7AM on collection day.
  • Trash in plastic bags may only be put out on the morning of collection day.
  • Receptacles must be removed from the curb by 6PM on collection day.

Public Works offers a mattress and box spring collection program, and slots should be scheduled in advance. Large appliances, electronics and other bulky waste may be put out at the curb, but many items need a disposal permit.

The Recycling Center is at 147 Hampshire St. in the back right corner of the Public Works yard. It takes many items that are not accepted in curbside recycling.

Student Registration Center, library cards, dog licenses and voter registration

Families register new students through the Student Registration Center at 459 Broadway, online, in person with a physical packet, or by emailing scanned forms. Staff can be reached at 617.349.6551.

Any resident of Massachusetts over the age of 5 can get a Cambridge Public Library card. To get a card, visit any library location with photo identification and proof of address.

A dog license runs from April 1 to March 31 of the following year, and is renewed annually. To get one, owners must provide proof of Cambridge residency and a current rabies vaccination.

The Election Commission registers voters online, in person at 689 Massachusetts Ave, or by mail.

Rental inspections, short-term rental registration and Logan Airport

The Inspectional Services Department enforces the State Sanitary Code in rental housing and investigates all complaints it receives.

Short-term rentals (under 30 consecutive days) are allowed only within set parameters and must be registered.

Boston Logan International Airport offers direct domestic and international flights.
