Local services and rules

Moving to Malden: who to call and what the city asks.

Malden is in Middlesex County, about five miles northwest of Boston. Trash and recycling pickup uses a Pay As You Throw (PAYT) system: residents buy blue City-issued PAYT bags, or an annual Trash Tag/Sticker for use with the black City-issued cart. The City names its neighborhoods as Bellrock, Edgeworth, Faulkner, Ferryway, Forestdale, Linden, Maplewood and West End.

Street sweeping, winter parking and snow emergencies

The street sweeping program runs from May 1st through November 1st on a regular schedule. Vehicles must be removed from one or both sides of the street during a scheduled sweep.

Winter parking rules restrict parking to one side of the street 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, once the City starts them for the season. During a snow emergency, a driver who must move a car and has no off-street parking can use one of the designated emergency parking lots.

After a snowstorm, snow must be cleared from the sidewalk next to a property within 24 hours for residential properties and 12 hours for businesses after the end of snow operations is declared. The City asks residents to sign up for the Malden Connect notification system for snow emergencies and other winter weather alerts.

Blue barrels, Helpsy and the DPW Yard

Recycling is picked up weekly on the same day as trash collection, in a blue City-issued wheeled recycling barrel or any standard covered recycling barrel. Eligible households are provided one black trash barrel and one blue recycling barrel, and may buy additional barrels.

The City provides curbside textile recycling through its partner vendor Helpsy, booked by appointment. For mattresses and box springs, the City has assembled a list of vendors that residents can choose from.

Residents can bring household hazardous items to the DPW Yard at 356 Commercial Street on designated days. Yard waste can be dropped off at the same yard on Saturdays from 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM.

National Grid and Malden Community Electricity

The City runs an electricity supply program called Malden Community Electricity. The City lists National Grid Electric as the electric utility and National Grid Gas as the gas utility.

Water bills and cable listings

Water and sewer bills are sent out monthly and are due on the 25th of every month. For billing or meter reading questions the number is 781-397-7090: Option 1 is for payment questions and Option 2 is for water meter reading questions.

For cable, internet and phone, the City lists Xfinity Comcast and FIOS Verizon.

Malden Center station and the Orange line

Malden Center station is at Commercial St and Pleasant St. Numerous public buses connect Maplewood to the Orange line.

The Welcome Center and the library on Salem Street

Malden Public Schools registers new families through the Welcome Center at 110 Pleasant Street; the phone number is 781-397-7271.

Library card registration at the Malden Public Library, 36 Salem St., is in person. A Malden Public Library card lets borrowers take out materials from libraries in Boston, Chelsea and Malden.

City Clerk, dog licenses and rental inspections

Voter registration in Malden can be done in person, by mail or online; the City Clerk office is at 215 Pleasant Street, Room 220.

All dogs living in the City of Malden must be licensed, with licenses renewed annually. Inspectional Services offers a Rental Unit Inspection Application.
