Local services and rules

Moving to Chambersburg: who to call and what the city asks.

Chambersburg, the county seat of Franklin County, runs its utilities itself. The Borough owns and operates its own electric distribution system, and only Master Electricians licensed by the Borough may do electric work inside the Borough limits. There are no variable rate electric deals in Chambersburg. Gas, water, sewer and trash also come from Borough departments, each described below.

Street sweeping and leaf collection

The Borough runs a street sweeping program as long as the weather permits. It also has a leaf collection program in the late fall.

Borough trash pickup and the twice-yearly bulky item drop-off

The Borough is the exclusive trash collection service for residents and businesses in Chambersburg. To arrange new trash service, call (717) 264-5151.

Recycling is single stream: everything goes in one bin and is collected once per week at the same place and time as trash.

The Borough offers all residents a bulky item drop-off program twice per year.

The Green Yard Waste Center

The Borough operates a Green Yard Waste recycling center. The center opens for the season on the first Tuesday in April and closes on the 3rd Saturday in November.

The Borough does not accept lithium batteries at its collection events.

Setting up an electric account

For setting up or closing an account, contact customer service at (717) 264-5151.

Gas, water and sewer from the Borough

Natural gas comes from the Borough's own Chambersburg Gas Department.

The Borough's Water Department provides drinking water and public sewer service for Borough customers. Problems with water service can be reported 24 hours a day at 717-263-4111.

A monthly Storm Sewer Pollution Control Fee is charged per sanitary sewer connection; it was raised to $4 in 2017.

Enrolling a student in the Chambersburg Area School District

Students are enrolled in the Chambersburg Area School District through its online registration. A parent, adoptive parent or court-appointed guardian may enroll a student. State law requires a complete record of immunizations for registration.

Registering to vote with Franklin County

Residents can register to vote in person at the Franklin County Voter Registration Office. The office can be reached at 717-261-3886.

The Codes Office and the Rental Property Code

The Borough's Codes Office enforces the Property Maintenance Code and the Rental Property Code.
