Local services and rules

Moving to Dedham: who to call and what the city asks.

Dedham is the county seat of Norfolk County. The town does not pick up hazardous waste at the curb. Construction debris is not household trash and is not collected curbside; a private hauler is called for pickup. Residents who move out are responsible for removing excess amounts of trash.

Parking and snow on Dedham streets

Parking is generally permitted along streets and in municipal lots unless posted signs restrict or prohibit it. In Dedham Square, spaces east of Ames Street along High and Washington Streets and Eastern Avenue have a 2-hour limit from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays.

Overnight parking in the Keystone Lot and Lower Gonzalez Lot in Dedham Square is restricted to residents with permits.

After a storm, no snow may be thrown or placed onto any portion of a street that has been plowed or cleared for safe travel.

Boston Carting Services and the collection schedule

Curbside trash and recycling collection is provided under a Town contract with Boston Carting Services, LLC. Trash is collected weekly. Recycling is collected every other week and is single stream, so paper, cardboard, bottles and cans go into one cart.

Yard waste is collected every other week on recycling day during a seasonal schedule set by the annual collection calendar.

Bulky items and white goods are collected by appointment, scheduled by phone with Boston Carting Services at 800-338-3867, with a collection fee per item.

The DPW holds monthly cardboard recycling events on the third Saturday of the month from 9AM to Noon for flattened cardboard boxes.

Trash carts and overflow bags

Each household is limited to one trash cart and one recycling cart, and official overflow bags are used for excess household trash.

Carts must be out before 7:00 AM on trash day and may not be placed out before 5:00 PM on the previous night. A broken trash or recycling cart is repaired or replaced by contacting the DPW.

Dedham-Westwood Water District and electricity aggregation

Water is supplied by the Dedham-Westwood Water District (DWWD), a non-profit public water system. Water bills can be paid online, and information on water restrictions is posted on the District website.

Dedham has a Community Electricity Aggregation program. Residents not yet participating can enroll through an online form on the program site.

New Resident Information page, schools and libraries

The town maintains a New Resident Information page with links on schools, voter registration, dog licensing, trash and recycling, water, electricity and transportation.

Dedham Public Schools include Avery, Greenlodge, Oakdale and Riverdale elementary schools, Dedham Middle School, Dedham High School and an Early Childhood Education Center, each with its own page.

The public library system has two locations, the Main Library on Church Street and the Endicott Branch next to the Endicott Estate.
