Local services and rules
Moving to Fort Pierce: who to call and what the city asks.
Fort Pierce Utilities Authority (FPUA) provides natural gas service in the Fort Pierce area, and its FPUAnet offers fiber internet in the city. FPUA also bills residents monthly for trash services. Once a hurricane watch or warning is announced, trash pick-ups are suspended.
Downtown parking rules
Two-hour time-restricted parking is enforced Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM in areas designated as 2-hour parking. Parking in city-provided spaces for more than 24 hours is prohibited unless otherwise authorized. Overnight parking in or adjacent to city parks and beaches is prohibited.
Green, blue and black carts
Residential household garbage collection in green carts is provided twice per week, recycling in blue carts once weekly, and yard waste in black carts once weekly. The Solid Waste Division is the exclusive recycling collection service provider for single-family homes, duplexes and multi-family properties, and every household is given a blue recycling cart.
Carts go at the curb the night before or by 7 a.m. on the service day, at least 5 feet from other objects, and only City-issued carts are serviced.
Bulky waste at the curb
Bulky waste is household items too large to fit in the trash cart with the lid closed, such as furniture, stoves, mattresses and appliances. Bulk waste placed curbside must adjoin the property that generated it, and hazardous materials are not accepted.
Household hazardous waste on Glades Cut-Off Road
St. Lucie County residents may bring acceptable household hazardous waste to the Solid Waste Baling & Recycling Facility at 6120 Glades Cut-Off Road in Fort Pierce.
FPUA electricity, water and wastewater
FPUA supplies electricity in a service area that covers the Fort Pierce city limits and extends beyond them. New residential service is started through FPUA's Customer Service. FPUA provides drinking water in Fort Pierce, with the water drawn from the Surficial Aquifer and the Floridian Aquifer. It also operates the wastewater system that collects, treats and disposes of sewage from its service area.
Flood plain permits and evacuations
Fort Pierce participates in the National Flood Insurance Program and its Community Rating System, which means residents receive a discount on NFIP flood insurance premiums. Any development in the flood plain, including placing or removing fill, requires a building permit. Evacuations are scheduled by county and City officials.
The New Residents Guide and the Peacock Arts District
The city site has a New Residents Guide that links to the Citizen Information Center, garbage and recycling, downtown parking, voter registration and utility payments. The Orange Avenue corridor between U.S. Hwy 1 and 10th Street is branded as the Peacock Arts District, or PAD.
St. Lucie County transit, airport and library cards
Area Regional Transit (ART), run by St. Lucie County's Transit Department, is a public transit system serving Fort Pierce, Port St. Lucie and St. Lucie Village. Treasure Coast International Airport (FPR) in St. Lucie County is a general aviation airport. St. Lucie County residents may get a library card free of charge, in person at any branch of the county library system.
