Local services and rules

Moving to Garden Grove: who to call and what the city asks.

Garden Grove is a city in northern Orange County, California. Short-term vacation rentals are prohibited in its residential zones. Water is billed by the City, but the Garden Grove Sanitary District is responsible for sewer and refuse utilities, in the city and in some areas outside city limits. When the temperature hits 95 degrees, the City opens a public cooling center at the Garden Grove Sports and Recreation Center, 13641 Deodara Drive.

Parking rules on Garden Grove streets

Under the City's parking laws, the City may designate temporary no-parking zones to move large equipment or structures, and a car parked in one can be ticketed like a car in a permanent red zone.

Residential streets are posted for sweeping, with no parking from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. twice monthly, and the signs on the street show the days. A vehicle parked on the street more than 72 hours in Garden Grove can be towed as abandoned. Vehicles may not stop, stand or park in any alley unless painted spaces allow it.

Commercially registered vehicles rated over one ton may not be parked or stored in residential neighborhoods unless conducting business.

Free oversized vehicle permits from City Hall

Oversized vehicles parked on public and private streets need a valid City-issued permit, and the permit is at no cost. Oversized means over 22 feet long, over 80 inches wide, or an RV of any size. Permits are for Garden Grove residents only.

A permit is requested online or in person at City Hall, 11222 Acacia Parkway. The request needs proof of residency (water/utility bill), a driver's license, an email address and a license plate number.

Water service and Southern California Gas Company

The City bills water. To start service, a new customer calls Water Billing at (714) 741-5078. A first-time water customer is charged a deposit on the first bill, and the smallest meter size (5/8"x3/4") has a $70.00 deposit.

Water service charges are billed by the City once every two months.

The City's services directory lists Southern California Gas Company as the gas company for residential customers.

Republic Services trash, recycling and bulky pickup

Trash and recycling collection for the Garden Grove Sanitary District is provided through a private contract with Republic Services, at (714) 238-3300. New residents contact Republic Services at the same number for trash service, according to the City's water start and stop page.

The black, green and brown residential barrels are all picked up every week on the same day, and containers must be at the curb by 6:00 A.M. on the regular collection day, per the City's collection schedule FAQs.

Republic Services gives each residential account three free bulky item collections a year, up to 10 items per pickup. A date is reserved by calling the same number.

Hazardous waste, motor oil and sharps kits

Household hazardous waste goes to the North Orange County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility at 1071 North Blue Gum Street in Anaheim. The facility is run by the County of Orange, and the hotline is (714) 834-6752.

Used motor oil can go to a State Certified Collection Center or be picked up free from the home through the City's residential program; the number to schedule is (800) 449-7587.

Garden Grove residents may request up to four free sharps disposal mail-back kits per year from Republic Services.

Dog licenses through PetData

Dogs over four months of age kept in Garden Grove must be licensed and have a current rabies vaccination. Licenses are not issued at City facilities. Owners license online at www.petdata.com or by mail, and the tag arrives by mail in about four weeks.

Orange County Fire Authority and free sandbags

The Orange County Fire Authority provides fire protection services for the City of Garden Grove.

During the rainy season the City, with the Orange County Fire Authority, provides up to 10 free sandbags to residents. Residents bring their own shovels and show proof of residency.

Points of interest and Garden Grove Unified School District

The City's website names Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD). The same page lists Christ Cathedral, Little Saigon, OC Koreatown, Historic Main Street and the Village Green park among the City's points of interest.

The Grove District-Anaheim Resort is Garden Grove's tourist district, one mile from the Disneyland Resort and parks.
