Local services and rules

Moving to Long Beach: who to call and what the city asks.

Long Beach is in southeastern Los Angeles County, California, and natural gas there comes from the city itself: Long Beach Utilities supplies it within the city limits. The City also gives each City-serviced account 12 Special Collections per calendar year at no additional cost, scheduled online or at (562) 570-2876, and a regulatory fee may apply for items needing special handling. Old mattresses have their own outlet: the City keeps a designated space at 970 W. Chester Place where residents can leave them 24 hours a day at no charge.

Moving van no parking areas and street rules

To get a designated no parking area for a moving van, contact Street Operations at 562-570-2726. Street sweeping in Long Beach is conducted weekly, and the schedule for an address is found on the City's interactive map. Vehicles parked in restricted areas during scheduled street cleaning are subject to citations. Street sweeping may or may not happen on rainy days, but the page advises moving the vehicle according to the posted street sweeping signs.

Under the Long Beach Municipal Code, permitted construction outside the Harbor District may proceed weekdays 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Preferential parking permits

Preferential parking permits are issued to residents of designated parking impacted areas in Long Beach, with proof of residency and vehicle registered ownership required. A new resident can apply through the Parking Permits Portal, by mail, or in person at Long Beach City Hall, 411 W Ocean Blvd, Lobby Level.

Each household may have up to three residential permits and one guest permit per year. The annual fee is $34.00 per residential or guest permit, prorated for permits issued after March, and permits expire at midnight on December 31st.

Water service, trash carts and special pickups

To start, stop or transfer water service, contact (562) 570-5700 or GO-UtilityBilling@longbeach.gov. Cart exchanges and replacements are requested through an online form on the City's refuse page, and account holders are encouraged to use online request forms instead of calling.

Each scheduled special pickup takes up to 8 large items or 25 bags, bundles or boxes. Items must be set out at the regular collection location by 6 a.m. on the confirmed pickup day.

Household hazardous waste sites

Long Beach and Los Angeles County residents can dispose of household hazardous waste at no cost at the Gaffey Street S.A.F.E. Center in San Pedro, the Los Angeles County EDCO Recycling and Transfer Environmental Collection Center in Signal Hill, or at local collection events. The legal limit for carrying household hazardous waste to a collection site is 15 gallons or 125 pounds.

Long Beach Unified School District enrollment and library cards

Long Beach Unified School District offers pre-K to grade 12 instruction in Long Beach, Lakewood, Signal Hill and Avalon on Catalina Island. To enroll, a parent or guardian must provide documentation showing that the residence is within school boundaries.

A Long Beach Public Library card is free and gives access to all locations and the digital offerings.

Pet licenses and DocuPet

Long Beach requires dogs over four months old to wear a license tag, and cats must have a tag or a microchip license (LBMC 6.08.010). First-time pet licensees receive one free custom tag through DocuPet, the official pet licensing partner of Long Beach Animal Care Services.

Voter forms, PRHIP, flood maps and Alert Long Beach

The Office of the City Clerk offers voter registration forms at City Hall, 411 W. Ocean Blvd., 1st Floor Lobby; the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk also handles voter registration.

Long Beach runs a Proactive Rental Housing Inspection Program (PRHIP) for rental housing.

To find out if a property is in a flood-hazard area, review the City's flood maps, check FEMA's Flood Map Service Center, or call (562) 570-6784. Residents can sign up for Alert Long Beach emergency notifications by mobile phone or email.

Long Beach Transit and Long Beach Airport

Long Beach Transit provides public transportation in southeastern Los Angeles County and northwestern Orange County. It also operates water taxis and paratransit services.

Long Beach Airport (LGB) is the city's airport and lists nonstop service to other airports.
