Moving to Westminster: who to call and what the city asks.

The City of Westminster water utility department provides water service in Westminster and part of Midway City. To sign up for water service, contact the Water Billing department by telephone or in person at City Hall; online sign-ups are not available. Water bills are issued every 8 weeks on Tuesdays, based on your zone, and rates are on a tiered structure. Water use is also subject to year-round restrictions found in Municipal Code 13.14; residents may water by hand-held bucket or hand-held hose with shut-off nozzle at any time.

Street sweeping hours and the I-405 Express Lanes

Street sweeping of residential streets can occur anytime between the hours of 8 am and 1 pm. If a sweeping day falls on an observed city holiday, sweeping is skipped for that cycle.

The I-405 project adds 405 Express Lanes between SR-73 and I-605, giving solo drivers the choice to speed up their commute for a toll. OCTA manages local bus routes, freeways, bike trails, and transit programs in Orange County.

Midway City Sanitary District: trash, sewer and containers

Solid waste and sewer services are provided by Midway City Sanitary District (MCSD). Trash pickup is handled by the same District, and residents can find their street sweeping and trash pickup days on the city's interactive map.

The District uses black containers for non-recyclable items, blue containers for recyclables and green containers for organics; one black container is sufficient for an average home. For additional containers or replacement of damaged, lost, or stolen containers, call (714) 893-3553 or email Midway City Sanitary District. Additional containers cost $50.83 per year.

Bulky items, mattresses and hazardous waste

Midway City Sanitary District provides a monthly bulky item service for some appliances and furniture, picking up a maximum of two items from each household every thirty days. Schedule at least one week in advance on (714) 893-3553.

The District no longer picks up mattresses and boxsprings; they can be brought to the District for free recycling Monday to Friday between 8 am and 4 pm. Residents of communities with metal dumpsters for their trash should contact CR&R at (800)826-9677 to schedule a pickup of large items.

Household hazardous waste can be disposed of free of charge at the Hazardous Waste Center at 17121 Nichols Street in Huntington Beach, open 9 am to 3 pm, Tuesday through Saturday. Orange County residents can also dispose of household hazardous waste for free at any of the County's four Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centers, open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Proof of County residence may be requested.

Southern California Edison and SoCalGas

The City of Westminster is serviced by Southern California Edison for electricity. It is serviced by SoCalGas for natural gas.

FEMA flood zones and city sandbags

To find out what flood zone a property is in, residents are directed to FEMA's map; if the property is in Zone A, the lender will require flood insurance.

During inclement weather, sandbags are available to City of Westminster residents on a first-come, first-served basis, limited to 12 per resident, and identification must be shown.

School districts, OC Public Libraries and voter registration

Westminster is served by several public school districts, including the Westminster School District, Garden Grove Unified School District, Huntington Beach Union High School District, and Ocean View School District.

The Westminster Library is part of the OC Public Libraries system. A library card from OC Public Libraries may be used at any branch; to apply for a card you must reside in California and provide valid ID.

Election information and voter registration can be obtained through the County of Orange Registrar of Voters. The Orange County Registrar of Voters lets residents register to vote online, and online applications take a minimum of 48 hours to process.
