Local services and rules

Moving to Greensboro: who to call and what the city asks.

Residential trash collection is handled by City crews, and most crews work four-day weeks, with no collection on Wednesdays. No loose leaves or organic material may be placed in the street or right-of-way, even temporarily. Greensboro is a city in Guilford County, North Carolina, and its county seat.

Downtown meter leases and street permits

In the downtown business district, on-street meter lease agreements and permits reserve street parking spaces, city lots, sidewalk and lane closures for special events or construction.

Water and sewer service applications

To start water/sewer service, submit a Request for Water/Sewer Service Application for each service address.

Trash carts, yard waste and bulk pickup

For new service, missed collections and other questions, call 336-373-CITY (2489). Carts must be at the street by 7am on collection day, and no more than two City approved solid waste containers may be placed at the curb. Yard waste is collected weekly on the regular garbage collection day.

Furniture, mattresses, swing sets and lawn mowers (drained of gas and oil) count as bulk trash, which is too big to fit in the green trash container. City crews cannot collect bulk items weighing more than 50 pounds.

Large appliances are collected by appointment; call 373-CITY (2489) to schedule. Items must be at the curb by 7 am on the appointment day.

Drop-off sites for hazardous waste, recycling and appliances

The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program is open to all residents of Guilford County; the center is at 2750 Patterson Street in Greensboro.

Residents of apartments and other multifamily communities without on-site recycling can drop off paper, plastic, metal and glass at the Solid Waste Transfer Station or the White St. Landfill.

Appliances from businesses or apartments, which the City does not collect, can be taken to the Guilford County Scrap Tire and White Goods Collection Facility.

Guilford County Schools, library cards and voter registration

Guilford County Schools enrolls students; parents of students new to the district provide a certified birth certificate and immunization records.

Greensboro Public Library cards are issued at City library branches with a photo ID showing your current address, or a photo ID plus something with your current address.

The Guilford County Board of Elections handles voter registration; questions can go to 336-641-3836.

Piedmont Triad International Airport and winter weather

Piedmont Triad International Airport (airport code GSO) is at 1000A Ted Johnson Parkway, Greensboro, between Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point where I-40, I-85 and I-73/I-74 converge.

The City runs a snow and ice removal program during winter weather.
